The St. Lawrence University baseball team saw four players earn All-Liberty League Second Team honors and three more named to the Third Team, as the conference office announced its end-of-year awards on Tuesday afternoon.
Named to the Second Team for the Saints were catcher
John Donnellan, outfielder
Jack Finnegan, designated hitter
Willie Landman, and relief pitcher
Joshua Polumbo. Starting pitchers
David Zuhlsdorf and
Joe LaPrade, along with first baseman
John Gannon, earned Third Team recognition.
Donnellan, who leads the modern era of St. Lawrence baseball with 43 runners caught stealing, slashed .301/.378/.495 with an .873 OPS. He was even better in conference play, posting a .358/.418/.597 slash line and a 1.015 OPS. The junior recorded 28 hits on the season, including 11 extra-base hits, seven doubles, one triple, and three home runs.
Finnegan was nothing short of electrifying for the Saints this season at the plate, on the basepaths, and in center field. The junior finished the year with five triples, ranking him in the top 20 nationally. He slashed .368/.437/.588 and ranked second on the team with a 1.025 OPS. A two-sport standout, Finnegan was a perfect 18-for-18 in stolen base attempts and flawless defensively, recording 71 putouts without committing an error. His five triples tied him for the third-most in a single season in program history alongside Nicholas Butler '22.
Landman served as a key lynchpin in the Scarlet and Brown lineup as the designated hitter, slashing .333/.443/.389. The senior struck out just five times in 108 at-bats, the fewest among Saints starters, ranking 29th nationally in the "toughest to strike out" category and leading the Liberty League as its hardest to strikeout. His .443 on-base percentage was second-best on the team, and he drew the second-most walks with 15.
Polumbo was highly effective out of the bullpen for St. Lawrence, making a team-high 13 appearances. He posted a 4-1 record, the best among Saints pitchers, and logged 26 innings with a 2.42 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. The senior recorded 10 strikeouts, earned two saves, and limited opposing hitters to a .262 batting average.
Gannon was a force for the Saints throughout the season, leading the team in batting average (.414), OPS (1.134), hits (48), home runs (4), total bases (74), slugging percentage (.638), walks (16), and on-base percentage (.496). Those numbers improved even further in Liberty League play, where he slashed .484/.534/.797 with a 1.331 OPS. His 48 hits ranked among the top 10 single-season totals in program history, and he surpassed the 100-hit mark for his collegiate career.
Zuhlsdorf served as the ace of the Saints' pitching staff, compiling a 3-3 record across 50 innings pitched, the second-most on the team. The junior southpaw posted a 6.12 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP in 11 appearances while holding opponents to a .266 batting average, and striking out 36 batters, the second-most on the team.
LaPrade established himself as a starter early in the season, highlighted by an eight-inning performance with seven strikeouts against RIT in March. The sophomore right-hander made six starts among 11 total appearances and led the team with 55.1 innings pitched. He finished the year with a 4.55 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP, a 3-4 record, two saves, and a team-high 43 strikeouts.
