The No. 19 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team held on to a one-goal lead to upset No. 15 Skidmore 11-10 on Saturday afternoon in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
The win moved the Saints to second place in the Liberty League standings at 10-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while Skidmore fell to 10-4 and 3-3.
Daniel Mahoney led the Saints on three goals and an assist, while
Patrick Murray netted two.
Jamie Rosenzweig and
Jensen Kohler tallied a goal and an assist each, while
Ethan Friedberg,
David Herlihy,
Ted Wilson, and
Asa Beach also scored for the Scarlet and Brown.
Defensively,
Drew Knight picked up a team-best seven ground balls and caused two turnovers, while
Ben Anderson finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers and
William Abplanalp won 12 faceoffs.
Goals from Mahoney, Murray, and Wilson, plus the combination of some lock down defense, allowed the Saints to take a 3-0 lead over the Thoroughbreds after the first 15 minutes.
Caleb Lawson and Herlihy traded goals to start the second and then three straight goals from the Thoroughbreds, knotted the game up 4-4. SLU went on a 3-1 run in the latter half of the second quarter, including a man-up goal from Rosenzweig with eight seconds remaining to take a 7-5 lead at the break.
Special teams continued to shine, as Friedberg opened the third quarter with the Saints' third man-up goal of the afternoon. The teams traded goals, as the Saints edged Skidmore 3-2 in the third to lead 10-7 heading into the final quarter.
The Thoroughbreds scored twice to bring the game back within one. Mahoney tallied his 40th goal of the season with 5:01 to play to push the Saints lead back to two. Skidmore's Jake Weiner scored with 19 seconds left to make it a one-goal game, but the Saints won the final faceoff and held on for the win.
"It was a beautiful day for lacrosse and a great effort by the team against a really good opponent," said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "We played tough at both ends of the field and earned a hard fought win and I'm very proud of them!"
Weiner led Skidmore with three goals and an assist.
Heath Mann matched his career best for the third time this season with 16 saves for the Saints, while Marc Gadbois recorded 11 saves for the Thoroughbreds.
Skidmore led in shots on goal (26-22), ground balls (29-26), and caused turnovers (8-6). Both teams won 12 faceoffs each, while SLU went 3-for-4 on the man up and Skidmore finished 1-for-2.
"Now we look forward to a little rest and recovery to get ready for senior day next weekend and another tough league opponent," Mahoney added.
Up next, the Saints host Vassar on Saturday, April 25 for senior day. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
