The St. Lawrence University baseball team jumped out to an early lead, but a pair of big innings by Ithaca proved to be the difference as the Saints fell, 8-6, on Friday afternoon at Tom Fay Field in Liberty League action.
St. Lawrence moved to 11-12 overall and 5-6 in conference play, while Ithaca improved to 15-11 on the season and 7-6 in the Liberty League.
The Saints struck first in the bottom of the opening inning.
John Gannon singled with two outs, and
Willie Landman followed with a base hit of his own. After
Eddie Morrissey was hit by a pitch to load the bases,
John Donnellan delivered the big swing of the frame, ripping a double down the left‑field line to clear the bases and give St. Lawrence a 3-0 lead.
Ithaca answered in the fourth inning. A solo home run provided the Bombers' first run, and the visitors capitalized on a defensive miscue later in the frame to plate two more and tie the game at 3-3.
The score remained deadlocked until the seventh inning. After
Max Cloutier led off with a single,
Jack Finnegan doubled down the left‑field line to put runners in scoring position.
Nolan Widrick followed with a two‑run single to right‑center, making it 5-3.
In the eighth inning, Ithaca put together its biggest offensive push of the afternoon. The Bombers strung together four runs in the frame, highlighted by timely extra‑base hits and situational execution, to take a 7-5 advantage.
Ithaca added an insurance run at the top of the ninth to extend the lead to 8-5, but the Saints made one final push in their last at‑bat.
Cloutier again ignited the rally with a leadoff single, and Widrick followed with another hit. Gannon drove in a run with a two‑out single up the middle to make it 8-6, bringing the tying run to the plate.
Gabe Albertson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Ithaca got a groundout to secure the win.
Donnellan led the Saints offensively, finishing 3‑for‑4 with three RBIs. Widrick added two hits and two RBIs, while Cloutier reached base twice and scored two runs. Finnegan chipped in with a pair of doubles.
On the mound,
David Zuhlsdorf pitched into the eighth inning, striking out eight, while
