Mahoney Records 100th Goal; Last-Second Overtime Winner Sinks Saints at Clarkson

Daniel Mahoney had a landmark contest, tallying his 100th career goal, Dan Anderson scored a game-tying goal in the fourth quarter, but Donnie Duffus delivered the game-winner in the dying seconds of overtime for Clarkson, as the Golden Knights rallied to defeat rival St. Lawrence 11-10 in a wild, back-and-forth North Country clash Wednesday afternoon in Potsdam, N.Y..

With the win, the Golden Knights improved to 8-4 on the season and 3-3 in Liberty League play, while the Saints fell to 9-5 and 3-2. Clarkson went 3-for-4 on the man-up, converting two power-play goals in a pivotal second quarter.

Robert Fox led Clarkson with three goals and three assists, while William Goyette tallied three goals. Donnie Duffus scored two, including the overtime winner, and Connor Holly and Ian Erskine each found the back of the net as well. James Auszura recorded two caused turnovers and Jack Garvey finished with three. Joe Porto won two faceoffs and picked up four ground balls.

For St. Lawrence, Daniel Mahoney paced the Saints with three goals and a team-high seven shots on goal, while Cam Croasdaile and Dan Anderson each scored twice. Jamie Rosenzweig contributed a goal and two assists, and Ted Wilson added a goal and an assist. Rogan Cardinal also scored, and Will Abplanalp won 15 of 23 faceoffs and grabbed six ground balls. Drew Knight finished with nine ground balls on the day.

Goyette got the Golden Knights on the board first at 13:30 of the first quarter, assisted by Ethan Hopkins. Mahoney answered immediately for the Saints to bust through the 100-marker, and just 17 seconds later Cardinal put St. Lawrence ahead 2-1. Fox tied it back up at 2-2, but the Saints responded with two straight to lead 4-2 after one.

The second quarter was a wild one. After Clarkson opened the scoring, St. Lawrence pushed the lead to 6-3 with back-to-back goals from Croasdaile and Mahoney. Clarkson then unleashed a four-goal run to flip the scoreboard, converting twice on the man-up as well to put the Golden Knights up 7-6 heading into halftime.

Clarkson extended the lead to 9-6 to open the third quarter with goals from Fox and Goyette, but Mahoney pulled the Saints within two with 5:57 to play in the third. The score held at 9-7 heading to the fourth.

Rosenzweig opened the fourth quarter with a goal at 13:45 to cut it to 9-8. After Clarkson converted a man-up goal to push the lead back to two, St. Lawrence responded with a goal at 8:19 and then Dan Anderson netted the tying goal at 2:51 to level the game at 10-10. With the clock winding down, both teams' final possessions came up empty, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, Duffus found the net with just three seconds remaining to seal the dramatic 11-10 victory for the Golden Knights.

Heath Mann made 16 saves in goal for St. Lawrence. Griffin Emerson earned the win for Clarkson with 15 saves.

Clarkson outshot St. Lawrence 44-38. The Golden Knights won nine faceoffs to the Saints' 15, with Abplanalp dominating for St. Lawrence. Clarkson went 3-for-4 on the power play while St. Lawrence went 0-for-3.

It's a quick turnaround for St. Lawrence, who returns to action Saturday when they take on the Skidmore Thoroughbreds on Saturday, April 18 at 2 p.m.
