Daniel Mahoney tallied five goals and
Jamie Rosenzweig picked up five points, as the No. 15 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team bounced back with a 13-9 win over Nazareth on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
Mahoney led the Saints with five goals, while Rosenzweig also picked up five points on a goal and four assists.
Patrick Murray added three goals, while
Ted Wilson,
Ben Anderson,
Drew Knight and
Quin Fedor also scored for SLU.
Ben Anderson's goal was his first collegiate goal in Scarlet and Brown.
Dan Anderson picked up five ground balls and caused three turnovers for the Saints. Mahoney also picked up five ground balls, while
Drew Knight grabbed four ground balls and caused two turnovers.
St. Lawrence scored the first three goals of the game unanswered, but the Golden Flyers responded with three of their own to tie things up. Mahoney scored his third of the game and the Saints' fourth of the quarter to put SLU up 4-3 after the first 15 minutes of play.
Nazareth opened the second quarter with a goal off the opening faceoff to tie the game back up 4-4, but the Saints went on to score the next five to build a 9-4 lead by halftime. The run was started by Rosenzweig and was capped by back-to-back goals from the long poles of Knight and Fedor. Rosenzweig tallied three goals in the second quarter.
Both teams tallied two goals apiece in the third quarter, as Wilson and Murray both scored for the Saints.
The Anderson brothers connected for the first goal of the fourth quarter, as
Ben Anderson scored on the man down, doubling the Saints lead 12-6. SLU and Nazareth traded goals throughout the fourth, which ended with a pair of goals from the Golden Flyers, but the Saints held onto their steady lead for the 13-9 win.
"That was a good win on the road," said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "I was really pleased with the improvements we made in our offensive transition game and we played solid defense all day. We are looking forward to heading down to Maryland this upcoming weekend for the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic, which is always an unbelievable experience!"
Louis Cogliandro led the Golden Flyers with three goals and an assist, while Carter Wegman picked up five ground balls and caused one turnover.
Rafferty Callahan finished with 10 saves for the win for St. Lawrence. Sven Habitzreuther made three saves for Nazareth, while McLean Ralston made two.
SLU outshot Nazareth 40-31, but the Golden Flyers held a 19-18 edge in shots on goal. SLU picked up 45 ground balls, while Nazareth led 16-10 in faceoffs.
St. Lawrence improved to 3-1 on the season, while Nazareth fell to 0-5.
The Saints travel to Maryland next weekend for the highly competitive and top ranked Callum Robinson Mustang Classic, where they will face Dickinson on Friday the 13th at 3:30 p.m. and Stevenson on Saturday the 14th at 8 p.m.
