No. 15 Saints Win Third Straight, Top Hampden-Sydney on Spring Break

The 15th-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team posted their third straight win, defeating Hampden-Sydney 14-11 on Wednesday afternoon at Georgetown Prep in North Bethesda, Md.

Patrick Murray led the Saints with five goals, while Daniel Mahoney tallied three goals and three assists. Cam Croasdaile tallied two goals and added two helpers, while Jamie Rosenzweig added one of each. Dan Anderson, Ted Wilson and Jensen Kohler also scored for SLU. Anderson also picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Drew Knight continued to lead the defensive core with 13 ground balls and four caused turnovers. Murray, Mahoney, Rogan Cardinal, and Sam Wade also collected three ground balls.

The Tigers netted the opening goal at 12:29, but was quickly followed up by Murray with his first of five, to tie the game 1-1. Hampden Sydney scored twice more and Murray added a second for the Saints, as the Tigers led 3-2 after the first 15 minutes.

St. Lawrence rebounded in the second, outscoring the Tigers 4-2 to take a 6-5 lead at halftime. Murray scored twice in the second, including one man-up tally, while Wilson and Anderson also struck for the Scarlet and Brown.

The Saints sparked a big run in the third, scoring three straight from Murray, Kohler, and Croasdaile coming out of the break. Cole Palmer scored his third for the Tigers, but was met by goals from Mahoney, Croasdaile's second of the quarter, and one from Rosenzweig, who capped off the quarter giving the Saints a 12-7 lead.

Mahoney scored back-to-back to start the fourth, doubling up the Saints lead 14-7. Hampden-Sydney attempted a comeback run, scoring the next four to bring the game back within three, but the Saints defense held the Tigers scoreless for the final four minutes for the win.

"That was a good north-south match-up for both teams," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "Hampden-Sydney is a well-coached team and forced us to start a bit slower than we would have liked. I thought we were excellent in the middle two quarters and early in the fourth, which was the difference."

Palmer led Hampden-Sydney with four goals and an assist.

Rafferty Callahan made 11 saves for the Saints, recording his sixth game with double-digit saves, while Will Palmer made 14 for the Tigers.

SLU led in shots (43-27) and ground balls (36-28), while Hampden-Sydney finished with the faceoff advantage (15-13). The Tigers went 2-for-3 on the man-up, while the Saints went 1-for-3.

St. Lawrence improved to 6-2 on the season, while Hampden Sydney fell to 5-5.

"We look forward to working our way north to prepare for another tough conference game on Saturday," Mahoney added.

The Saints will continue their spring break travels and jump back into Liberty League play at Ithaca on Saturday, March 28. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
