Four Saints netted two goals each, as the No. 15 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team came from behind to defeat Union 11-10 in the conference opener on Saturday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.
Daniel Mahoney scored two goals and added two helpers, while
Ted Wilson,
Henry Crean,
Patrick Murray also tallied two goals each.
Ethan Friedberg,
Dan Anderson and
Asa Beach all scored once.
Drew Knight picked up a team-high seven ground balls, while
Quin Fedor caused four turnovers and
William Abplanalp went 13-for-18 from the faceoff circle and picked up four ground balls.
Mahoney struck first to give the Saints the early edge, but Union scored two of their own to take the lead. Crean then scored on the man-up, but he was followed up by a Garnet Charger goal 32 seconds later, as Union led 3-2 after the first.
Union opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals, but Anderson and Mahoney struck twice for SLU to bring the game back within one. Bo Bensley scored for Union to make it 6-4 at halftime.
St. Lawrence was hot in the third quarter outscoring the Garnet Chargers 6-2 in the third quarter to edge Union 10-8 heading into the final quarter.
The Saints defense held strong in the fourth and fended off the final Union possession of the game for the 11-10 win.
"A great effort today by the team to keep battling for 60 minutes," said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "It always seems to go down to the wire against Union, and our team kept their composure throughout."
"Coach O and Coach Condon did a great job with some adjustments with the defense and face off unit, and I thought we dodged harder and shot the ball better after halftime. We're excited to get to some warmer weather and prepare for the next game on Wednesday."
Luke Allen led Union with three goals.
Rafferty Callahan made nine saves for SLU, while Nick Lynch finished with 16 saves for Union.
SLU led 27-19 in shots on goal, and led in ground balls 31-23. St. Lawrence capitalized on 3-of-5 man-up opportunities and doubled up on faceoffs 16-8, while Union went 1-for-2 with the extra man.
The Saints improved to 5-2 on the season and 1-0 in Liberty League play, while Union fell to 1-8 and 0-1.
St. Lawrence heads south to play Hampden-Sydney at Georgetown Prep in North Bethesda, Md. on Wednesday, March 25 at 2 p.m.
