A huge second quarter helped power the 14th-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 16-10 win over Stevenson to close out the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic on Saturday evening in Owing Mills, Md.
Mahoney matched his career-best 10 points, with five goals and five assists to lead the offense.
Jensen Kohler and
Patrick Murray recorded three goals each, while
Dan Anderson finished with two goals, two helpers and three ground balls.
Henry Crean, Nathan Cochlin and
Cam Croasdaile also scored for SLU.
Drew Knight continued his stellar weekend on defense with 12 ground balls and two caused turnovers, while
William Abplanalp went 19-for-29 from the faceoff dot. Â
Stevenson got the better of the play in the first quarter, scoring the first three goals of the game. Mahoney stopped the run to make it 3-1, notching the Saints first goal of the game. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the first and Stevenson held onto a 5-3 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.
It was all Scarlet and Brown on both sides of the ball in the second quarter. The Saints dominated offensively and locked down on defense to shut out the Mustangs 7-0. Kohler started the eight-goal run with five seconds to play in the first and SLU went on to take a 10-5 lead at halftime.
Both Kohler and Mahoney notched hat tricks in the first half.
St. Lawrence's run continued in the third, with back-to-back goals from Coghlin and Murray to make it 12-5. The run continued with Anderson's second of the game and totaled 11 goals, before Stevenson was able to put two on the board within 33 seconds. The Saints held the Mustangs scoreless for just about 28 minutes and SLU led 13-7 heading into the final frame.
Both teams put up three goals each in the fourth, but the strong second quarter allowed the Saints to come away with the final win of the tournament.

Gavin Gossenz, Darrell Curtis, and Max Racich led Stevenson with two goals each.
Rafferty Callahan stopped 10 shots between the pipes for SLU, while Tyler Merchant made 16 for the Mustangs.
SLU led in shots on goal 32-20, ground balls 35-26, faceoffs 19-11, and caused turnovers 10-8.
St. Lawrence improved to 4-2 on the season, while Stevenson fell to 1-6.
The Saints head back to Canton and are scheduled to open Liberty League play on Saturday, March 21 vs. Union at 12 p.m.
