Red-hot three-point shooting and contributions from the bench sent the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team to an 82-65 win over RIT on Saturday. The victory gives them a season sweep over the Tigers as they continue through their Liberty League schedule.
Colton Suriano's 5-7 night beyond the arc led him to a career-best point output and powered the Scarlet and Brown, as he dropped an astounding 71.4 per cent on three-point attempts. That drew praise from his head coach following the conclusion of the game.
"Colton was on fire today, and if he stays that aggressive our offense will exponentially improve down the stretch," said Saints head coach
Chris Downs.
St. Lawrence now finds themselves 11-10 on the season, including a 9-5 conference record. They are two games clear of Ithaca for fourth in the Liberty League with four games remaining in the regular season. The top four seeds host a LL tournament game.
The opening half was a tightly contested affair. RIT jumped out to an early 4-0 lead behind layups from Jackson Otis and Xavier Nelson. The Saints responded with their hot shooting, as
Tommy McMahon and
Colton Suriano each connected on early triples. A late jumper by Suriano and free throws from
Connor Parkes helped the Saints to a 30-22 lead heading into the break.
St. Lawrence broke the game open in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 52-42 with a clinical display of outside shooting. The Saints found their rhythm from beyond the arc, shooting 10-15 as a team from three. Suriano remained hot from the field, while
Adam Dudzinski added crucial triples to extend the lead, eventually cruising to a wide-margin victory.
Suriano ended the day with a career-best 19 points, entering double figures for the second time in his career. He shot 7-10 from the field. Dudzinski, Parkes, and
Aidan Phelan also reached double figures, with the latter two doing so coming off the bench.
Jlin Brown dished out seven assists and
Tommy McMahon had four steals.
St. Lawrence returns to the road next weekend, as they head to Hobart and Skidmore for their final road weekend of the Liberty League season. They return home to wrap up the regular season against Rensselaer and Union the following weekend.
