Henry Crean and
Patrick Murray each recorded a hat trick, but the No. 11 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team fell to No. 18 St. John Fisher 12-8 on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
Crean also picked up three ground balls, while Murray grabbed two.
Daniel Mahoney finished with a goal and an assist, while
Cam Croasdaile also scored for the Saints.
Connor McMahon helped lead the defense with two caused turnovers and three ground balls, while
Drew Knight picked up a team-best five ground balls.
Murray scored four minutes into the first quarter, striking first for the Saints for the 1-0 lead. The Cardinals responded with two goals of their own, but Croasdaile was able to even the score, knotting the first quarter 2-2.
Mahoney opened the scoring in the second quarter, with just five seconds remaining on the shot clock to put SLU back up by one, 3-2. St. John Fisher then scored three unanswered goals to build a 5-3 lead over SLU heading into the break.
St. John Fished outscored St. Lawrence 5-2 in the third to build a five-goal lead over the Saints. The Cardinals struck twice before Murray scored his second of the game, and the teams traded goals before SJF added two goals in the final two minutes to lead 10-5.
Crean opened scoring in the fourth quarter and scored twice for the Saints. Murray scored his third of the game on the man-up with an assist to Mahoney, but the Cardinals strong third quarter allowed them to hold onto the win.
"Certainly a day that we didn't execute well enough to win, which starts with me having the team better prepared," said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "Credit to St. John fisher for making the plays that they needed to. Early on in the season can be a bit of a roller coaster ride, so we will keep working on finding more consistency in our game and I am confident we will."
Lane Edinger led the Cardinals with two goals and two assists, while Ethan Hodge picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Rafferty Callahan made 13 saves and
Heath Mann made one for the Saints, while Tyler Manning made 12 for St. John Fisher.
The Cardinals outshot the Saints 39-29, including a 26-20 advantage in shots on goal. SLU held the ground ball advantage 35-30 and both teams capitalized on one man-up opportunity.
The Saints moved to 2-1 on the season, while St. John Fisher improved to 3-0.
St. Lawrence heads back to Rochester next weekend and is scheduled to play Nazareth on Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m.
