Patrick Murray played the hero for the No. 11 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team, scoring with 11 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, as the Saints upset No. 10 Cortland 13-12 in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon at North Country Field.

Mike Mahoney. "Marcus Sherburne and his staff, especially Randy DeLorme, who spent countless hours plowing the field over the past few days. Coach Puck and staff, Coach Brekke and staff, our game crew, our team and our administration. It was truly a team effort!"
Jamie Rosenzweig led St. Lawrence with three goals and two assists, while
Nathan Coghlin scored his first two collegiate goals.
Daniel Mahoney finished with a goal and three helpers, while
Henry Crean tallied one of each.
Ted Wilson,
Charlie Cunningham,
Cam Croasdaile, Murray,
Drew Knight, and
Asa Beach also scored for SLU.
Knight, who also tallied his first collegiate goal with the long pole, led the defense with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Wyatt Ryckert went 11-for-22 on faceoffs and also grabbed five ground balls, while Mahoney finished with four and
Quin Fedor and
Michael Miele each came up with two caused turnovers.
Knight kicked things off for the Saints, scoring just 16 seconds into the first quarter. The Red Dragons responded with three unanswered goals to finish the first quarter up 3-1.
Cortland made it 4-1 to start the second, but Coghlin scored his first of the game to stop the run and bring the game back within two. The Red Dragons scored another pair of goals to make it 6-2, but St. Lawrence answered with three goals from Beach, Cunningham and Mahoney to end the second quarter down by one.
SLU kept the run going, as Rosenzweig opened the second half with his first, tying things up 6-6. The team's traded goals and Rosenzweig scored his second of the game on the man up to keep the game tied at 8-8 heading into the fourth.
In the back-and-forth fourth quarter, the game came down to the last few possessions. St. Lawrence held for most of the final minute, the Red Dragons were sent to the box on an offsides call, and Murray flew down the center lane and scored the game winner on the man up with just 11 seconds left on the clock, for the upset win.
"As for the game, I feel the same way," Mahoney added. "That is a tough team that we faced and we had so many guys step up in big situations that I am so proud of. We know that we have many things to improve on, but if we can build on a foundation of toughness, resilience and playing as a team, we will continue to make positive strides moving forward!"
Sean Kavanagh led Cortland with two goals, six assists and four ground balls.
Rafferty Callahan made 12 saves for the Saints, while Charlie Falowski finished with 14 for the Red Dragons.
St. Lawrence outshot Cortland 42-32 including 27-24 in shots on goal and went 3-for-3 with the extra man.
The Saints improve to 2-0 on the season and sent Cortland home with their first loss at 1-1.
Next up, SLU travels to Rochester to take on No. 18 St. John Fisher, this Saturday at 2 p.m.
