Gannon Plates Four More RBI; Baseball Splits Twin Bill With Bates

Senior John Gannon was an offensive catalyst once again for the Saints, going 3-for-8 with four RBI, while right-hander Noah Clausen earned his first collegiate win on the hill, as the St. Lawrence University baseball team split a doubleheader against Bates College on Saturday afternoon on the campus of the University of Delaware in Newark, Del.

St. Lawrence moved to 1-2 on the year, while Bates improved to 2-1.

Eddie Morrissey also had a strong day for St. Lawrence, going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Matt Davis went 4-for-7 with an RBI in the twin bill.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 7, Bates 4 (7 Innings)

In game one, Bates got off to another strong start as they took a 3-0 lead in the first two innings. A leadoff single at the top of the first, followed by a walk and a pair of stolen bases, put the Bobcats in a good position, and a two-RBI single put them up 2-0. Another RBI single in the second made it 3-0.

The lead would not last long as the Saints gained the lead at the bottom of the second, hanging a crooked number.

Ethan Harris started the attack with a leadoff single, and Gabe Albertson followed with a double that sent him to third. A pair of outs put the Saints' back against the wall, but a fielding error allowed St. Lawrence to score a run and keep the threat alive. A walk to Ed. Morrissey loaded the bases for the Scarlet and Brown, and Gannon promptly emptied them with a three-RBI double to left center to make it a 4-3 game.

Bates went quietly in the top of the third, and the Saints tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning. Harris doubled his way aboard and was brought around to score with a single by Davis to take the 5-3 lead.

Bates answered back in the fourth with a single run to bring it back to a one-run game.

The score held until the bottom of the fifth, where the Saints made it a 7-4 ball game. St. Lawrence's Albertson singled down the right field line to begin the inning, and the Saints proceeded to hit four more singles in a row, plating two runs in the process. Siano and Morrissey accounted for the RBI in the inning, while Nolan Widrick and Jack Finnegan showed off their wheels on the base paths, scoring the runs.

St. Lawrence's arms did the rest, keeping Bates off the board the rest of the way.

James Morr started on the hill for the Saints and pitched 1.2 innings, striking out one Bobcat. Clausen earned his first career win on the bump in his St. Lawrence debut, pitching 1.2 innings and giving up just two hits. Joshua Polumbo took the ball for 0.2 innings of work, while Joe LaPrade finished off the game, pitching three innings, allowing no hits, and striking out two for the save.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 6, Bates 13 (7 Innings)

In game two, Gannon stayed hot for the Saints as he singled home Siano, who reached base on a walk to lead off the game. St. Lawrence wasn't able to get anymore across the plate in the threat but had the 1-0 lead in tow.

Things turned up a notch at the top of the third, as the Scarlet and Brown marched to a 6-0 lead, thanks to a five-run inning. Willie Landman, Davis, and Eoin Morrissey all provided RBI singles that ballooned the score to 5-0. The inning was capped off by Finnegan, who had a sacrifice fly to center field that brought Davis around to score.

The Bobcat bats woke up in the bottom half of the inning as they got four of those runs back to make it a 6-4 contest. Bates scored twice more in the bottom of the fourth to crawl all the way back to a tie. Things only got worse from there as Bates scored seven runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.

Boden Driscoll got the start on the hill, pitching a single inning, and was followed by Polumbo, Ryan McCausland, Liam Hickey, JJ Humenay, and Nathan Jackson.

St. Lawrence will be back on the diamond on March 7, when the team heads to Purchase, N.Y. to take on SUNY Purchase in a doubleheader that begins at 11 a.m.
