Daniel Mahoney scored a career-high eight goals, tying the single-game record for goals in a game, to lead the No. 13 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 17-9 season-opening win over Western New England on Thursday afternoon in Springfield, Mass.
Mahoney's eight goals ties the previous single-game goals record set by Bob Kinscherf in 1977. With his seventh point/sixth goal of the day Mahoney also recorded his 100th career point in Scarlet and Brown.Â
Ethan Friedberg also scored a career-best with four goals and added an assist for five points, while
Henry Crean tallied three goals and one assist.
Ted Wilson and William Alplanalp each netted one. Mahoney added two helpers for 10 points, while
Jamie Rosenzweig recorded five assists.
Alplanalp went 15-for-27 from the faceoff dot and picked up a team-high seven ground balls.
Quin Fedor led the defense with five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while
Drew Knight picked up five ground balls and caused two turnovers.
St. Lawrence shut out Western New England 4-0 in the first quarter on a hat trick from Mahoney and Alplanalp's first career goal. Sophomore goaltender Raffery Callahan picked up his first career start, stopping all five shots on goal to hold the Golden Bears scoreless in the first 15 minutes.
Crean scored his first of the season on the man up to kick off the second quarter. He was followed by goals from Wilson and Friedberg's first of the game. Jacob Roy scored the first goal for WNE to put the Golden Bears on the scoreboard with 4:40 to play in the second.
SLU led 8-2 at halftime, after Mahoney picked up his fourth goal of the afternoon.
The Saints scored back-to-back to start the third quarter with goals from Crean and Friedberg to build a 10-2 lead over the Golden Bears. SLU carried a 13-5 lead into the final frame.
Western New England built a little bit of momentum, scoring three unanswered goals to open the fourth, but their momentum was halted by back-to-back goals for Mahoney's seventh and eighth of the game. Rafe Grant scored once more for the Golden Bears, but another set of goals from Crean and Friedberg sealed the 17-9 final.
"I thought it was a great first game to get under our belts," said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "We played hard, we did a lot of things well, and we can learn a great deal from some of the mistakes we made. We will focus on finding ways to be better with a quick turnaround to Sunday."
Roy, Dylan Nardone, and Thomas Labbe led WNE with two goals each.
Callahan finished with 11 saves for the Saints, while Chase Beyus also made 11 for the Golden Bears.
St. Lawrence's man-up shined going 4-for-6, while the Saints' penalty kill held WNE scoreless going 0-for-4.
SLU moved to 1-0 on the season, while WNE fell to 0-1.
The Saints will return to Canton to host No. 16 Cortland in their home opener on Sunday, February 22 at 1 p.m.
