The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team protected their home courts on Sunday afternoon, yielding only one set loss over the entire nine-match slate, leading to a 9-0 victory over SUNY Oneonta at the Newell Field House.
With the result, the Saints improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Scarlet and Brown dictated the tempo from the opening serve, surrendering only six games throughout doubles play. At the top of the lineup,
Abigail Sicuranza and
Ellie Fritz broke serve often to cruise to a 6-1 win. The No. 2 pairing of
Maya Stepic and
Alexandra Fuller followed with a 6-2 victory, while
Sarah Oldland and
Kate Butler polished off the sweep at No. 3 with a 6-3 result.
In singles play, the Saints maintained their rhythm, capturing nearly every flight in straight sets.
Ellie Fritz and
Maya Stepic both took home 6-0, 6-3 wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively.
At the No. 3 spot,
Sarah Oldland was nearly untouchable, allowing just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 rout.
Abigail Sicuranza and
Kate Butler also navigated their matches, with Sicuranza taking a win in the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-3, and Butler won the No. 6 flight 6-1, 6-1.
The most competitive match of the afternoon took place at No. 5 singles, where
Alexandra Fuller faced a challenge from Oneonta's Ashley Glaviano. After narrowly dropping a first-set tiebreaker 7-6 (9-7), Fuller rebounded to sweep the second set 6-0. She then outlasted her opponent in a 10-4 tiebreaker to preserve the team's perfect scorecard.
St. Lawrence will carry this momentum into next weekend for a pair of road contests against Daemen and Rochester.
