The Saints began their spring season on the right foot as the St. Lawrence University women's tennis team swept Saint Michael's 7-0 on Friday at the Newell Field House.
St. Lawrence improved to 1-0 with the win, while the Purple Knights fell to 6-6.
The Scarlet and Brown took the 1-0 lead early with three wins in doubles play.
At number one,
Angelica Aksdal-Jansen and
Molly Jespersen teamed up to defeat Lucy McPherson and Jedidiah Zu, 6-3, while at two,
Ariane Karera and
Elisa Iuri defeated Emma Gredenhag and Annabelle Aldrete, 6-2. At three, it was
Yvette Karera and
Eleanor McDermed winning 6-1 against Kasey Johnson and Ana Maria Ricuarte.
The Saints found similar success in singles, going 6-0.
Aksdal-Jansen played at one against McPherson and won her match 7-5, 6-2, while her doubles partner Jespersen had little trouble defeating Gredenhag 6-0, 6-1. Iuri was in the number three spot and, much like Jespersen, cruised to a win, 6-1, 6-1, against Xu.
The closest singles match came at four, where
Yvette Karera and Aldrete split the first two sets to go to a tiebreak. Karera came through with a 10-4 win to take the match.
Ariane Karera and McDermed finished off the match at five and six, respectively. Karera defeated Ricuarte 6-1, 6-1, while McDermed was perfect, beating Bedard 6-0, 6-0.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back at the Newell Field House on Sunday, February 15, when they host SUNY Oneonta in a 2 p.m. match.
