Cayden Casey scored for the Saints, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 3-1 to Maryville in an exhibition contest on Saturday evening at Appleton Arena.
The Saints outshot Maryville 27-23, but two power-play goals and an empty-net tally helped the visitors secure the win.
St. Lawrence generated opportunities throughout the opening period, including chances from
Cooper Pierson,
Owen Tylec,
Luke Posthumus and
Andrew Brown, but Maryville goaltender Bruno Bruveris kept the game scoreless through the first five minutes.
The visitors broke through at the 5:25 mark of the first period after going on the man-advantage. Anthony Hall converted on the power play off assists from Rihards Simanovics and Tanner Bruender to give Maryville a 1-0 lead.
The Scarlet and Brown had two power-play opportunities later in the period following a pair of penalties, but were unable to solve Bruveris as Maryville carried the one-goal advantage into the first intermission.
St. Lawrence continued to press in the second period, outshooting the visitors 8-8 in the frame and getting a strong chance from Dirracolo, who hit the post during the latter stages of the period. Despite the pressure, the Saints were unable to find an equalizer.
A late penalty at the end of the period gave Maryville a carryover power play entering the third.
The visitors capitalized just 51 seconds into the final frame. Antoine Dorion scored with the man advantage off assists from Bruender and Simanovics to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Saints answered less than three minutes later. At the 3:42 mark, Filip Juříček took a pass from
James Fisher and brought the puck around the back of the net. The sophomore skipped a pass across the crease to Casey, who buried the feed to make it a 2-1 game.
St. Lawrence continued to push for the equalizer, generating several chances throughout the period, including a pair of power plays in the final nine minutes.
With the clock winding down, the Saints pulled goaltender
Colin Winn for an extra attacker. Maryville sealed the result at 18:50 of the third period when Blake Pilgrim-Edwards scored into the empty net off an assist from Dorion.
Winn made 20 saves for St. Lawrence, while Bruveris stopped 26 shots for Maryville.
The Saints finished the night 0-for-5 with the extra skater, while Maryville went 2-for-3. St. Lawrence finished with a 27-23 advantage in shots on goal.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back on the ice next weekend when the team heads to New England for a pair of games against Providence and UMass Lowell.
