Saints' Third-Set Rally Falls Short in Straight-Set Defeat to William Smith

The St. Lawrence University volleyball team dropped their Liberty League Saturday afternoon contest against William Smith, wrapping up the weekend with a 3-0 (16-25, 12-25, 21-25) defeat.

The Saints are 12-10 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Herons improved to 15-4 and 6-1.

St. Lawrence came out of the gate strongly, opening the first set with a 4-2 lead behind kills from Cassady Smith and Araiza Acum-Santos, but William Smith tied it at 4-4 and took control with a 6-0 run for a 12-6 advantage. Two service aces from Smith pulled the Saints within 12-9, but the Herons answered with a 6-0 run of their own to go up 18-9 en route to the set win.

The Herons led 5-2 early and stretched the margin to 17-7, with Senya Dorny collecting several of her 11 kills in the set. Bridget Gammons and Flittie each added kills in a 12-point effort for the Saints.

The Saints produced their best offense in the third set.  After William Smith built a 7-3 lead, St. Lawrence strung together a long run of offense fueled by Gammons and Vanessa Latam and tied the score six times, including at 20-20 on a Latam kill. William Smith then scored five of the final six points to secure the sweep.

Gammons led St. Lawrence with seven kills and hit .438 without an error. Flittie added six kills, Smith had a team-high 13 digs, and Latam finished with 16 assists and six digs.

It's a quick turnaround for the Saints, who now host SUNY Poly in a non-conference slate before a critical set of conference matchups with playoff implications against Skidmore and Union on the weekend.
