Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Two Score Collegiate Firsts, Helge Records First Career Shutout; Saints Defeat Maine 3-0

Brooke Mulvihill scored her first of the season, Mae Severn and Jaylee MacKinnon tallied their first collegiate goals and first-year goaltender Maja Helge secured her first collegiate shutout, as the St. Lawrence women's hockey team defeated Maine on Friday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.

The Saints picked up their first win of the season and moved to 1-3-0, while the Black Bears land at 1-3-0 as well.

Mulvihill was first to the scoreboard for the Saints for the 1-0 edge. Cheyenne Degeer forced a turnover at Maine's goal line, sent a back-handed pass to Mulvihill, who hammered it home over the blocker for the first goal.

Severn picked up the Saints second goal, recording her first collegiate goal in Scarlet and Brown, just 1:24 into the second period. Meghan Crowley skated into the zone, passed to Abby Hehl, who was being trailed by Severn, Severn sent a long shot on goal for the 2-0 lead.

With 2:19 to play in the third, the Black Bears pulled Kila Lahtinen for the extra attacker, but MacKinnon sealed the win for the Saints with an empty netter, as she also recorded her first collegiate goal for SLU. MacKinnon flew down the right boards, pick-pocketed the puck at the blue line and skated in all alone for the 3-0 final.

"We played much harder tonight and had to as Maine brought it again with their play and pace," said head coach Chris Wells. "They play a very connected game and we had a hard time sustaining momentum. We made some good plays and had a couple really good penalty kills in the second half to get the win."

"I'm happy for the first goal scorers and Maja for her shutout," Wells added. "We will be able to take a ton out of this weekend as we move forward with our young group. Clarkson next week is always fun this time of year, we will enjoy the trip home and the weekend then start getting prepared for next week."

Helge recorded 32 saves in her shutout effort, while Lahtinen made 21 saves for the Black Bears.

Maine led in shots (64-42) and shots on goal (33-24), both teams were successful on the penalty kill and the Saints blocked 22 shots to Maine's nine.

School day fun is on the agenda for the Saints, as the host Clarkson in a non-conference school-day matinee on Thursday, October 8 at 11 a.m.
