A milestone performance by senior forward Adam Dudzinski highlighted St. Lawrence University men's basketball's 71-59 victory over Clarkson University on Monday afternoon.
Dudzinski, a native of Syracuse, N.Y., scored the 1,000th point of his collegiate career, becoming the newest member of the Saints' 1,000-point club. He finished the game with a double-double, recording 18 points and 12 rebounds. Dan Anderson led all Saints scorers with 19 points.
St. Lawrence opened the scoring with a Dudzinski three-pointer to take a 3-2 lead. Clarkson responded by going ahead 7-6 and held the advantage for much of the first half. The Saints regained the lead at 18-17 just under seven minutes remaining in the half.
St. Lawrence followed with a five-point run, highlighted by two free throws from Charlie VanOehsen for his first points of the season. Tommy McMahon connected on a three-pointer as the Saints built their largest lead of the half and carried a 35-27 advantage into halftime.
Both teams traded possessions early in the second half until Anderson broke through with a three-pointer two minutes in. Clarkson answered with a six-point run to trim the deficit to 38-36 and soon reclaimed the lead for the first time since the opening minutes.
The game remained tight through the middle portion of the half, with neither team able to create separation. With just over nine minutes remaining, the Saints retook the lead and pulled away with a nine-point run to extend the margin to 64-54.
Clarkson attempted to rally behind a 34-point performance from Braeden Burns, but St. Lawrence maintained control down the stretch to secure the 12-point victory.
The Saints will continue Liberty League play on the road this weekend, traveling to face Bard College on Friday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m., followed by Vassar College on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 4 p.m.
