Led by a dominant performance from senior guard
Dan Anderson, the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team secured a wire-to-wire 75-66 victory over Skidmore College on Friday night. Ten different Saints found the scoresheet in a contest where the Scarlet and Brown never trailed.
With the win, the Saints move to 6-8 overall and pull back to .500 in Liberty League play with a 4-4 conference record.
First-year
Tommy McMahon set the tone early, draining a contested, off-balance jumper to open the scoring. Boosted by timely buckets from Anderson and a three-pointer from Coulton Suriano, St. Lawrence jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the opening five minutes.
The Saints broke the game open late in the first half with a 7-0 run, extending their advantage to 27-6 at its largest lead.
Adam Dudzinski capped the dominant first-half performance with a late triple, sending the Saints into the locker room with a 41-22 advantage.
While Skidmore chipped away at the lead in the second half, the Saints remained composed. Dudzinski opened the period with back-to-back scores, followed by high-percentage layups from McMahon and
Chris Downs Jr. A three-pointer from
Aidan Phelan kept the Thoroughbreds at arm's length, and
Charlie VonOehsen iced the contest with a pair of clutch free throws in the final minute as the Thoroughbreds fouled late.
Anderson was the catalyst for the offense, tying his season-high with 23 points. McMahon followed with a season-best 14 points of his own, while Dudzinski provided the muscle on the glass, leading the team with eight rebounds. First-year Jacob Gooden posted 32 points for Skidmore, recording a career-high for the Thoroughbreds in the loss.
Up next, the Saints face a major test Saturday afternoon as they host Hobart in a rematch of the 2024 Liberty League Championship. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Burkman Gymnasium.
