Skidmore Shuts Out Saints in Conference Opener

Elizabeth Walsh turned aside nine shots, but the St. Lawrence University field hockey team fell to 0-1 in Liberty League play following a 4-0 loss at the hands of Skidmore at the conference opener at Hall-Leet Stadium in Canton, N.Y. on Saturday.

St. Lawrence's overall record moves to 3-4 with the loss.

Skidmore began the game with a flurry of opportunities, recording the first six shots of the contest and testing Saints keeper Elizabeth Walsh. After sustaining that pressure, the Thoroughbreds scored the first goal of the game on a netmouth scramble, scoring on Erin Ohlenbusch's second consecutive shot to make it 1-0 at 4:02. Right before the first quarter time ended, Molly Van Vranken made it 2-0.

Skidmore would add a third goal and make it 3-0 before the half. St. Lawrence had rebounded well in terms of carrying the play, adding their first quarter of the contest and leading the shot count 7-2 in the game's second quarter.

Colby Paul added some more Skidmore insurance in the third, making it 4-0.

The Thoroughbreds locked it down from there, with keepers Nicole Sylvestri and Allison Morgan combining to make eight saves.

Offensively, St. Lawrence was led by Maja Helmer's four shots. Mayson Blondek had three shots on goal.

The tough tests continue through the Saints' conference swing next weekend, when they travel to William Smith on Friday, October 3 to play the Herons in Geneva, N.Y.
