Shaw Tallies for Saints in Two-Goal Loss at William Smith

Maddy Shaw scored the lone goal in the second quarter, and goalkeeper Elizabeth Walsh made six saves as the St. Lawrence University field hockey team lost 3-1 to William Smith on Thursday evening.

The loss brings the Saints' record to 0-2 in Liberty League play as they gear up for a tough test Sunday against nationally-ranked Rochester.

"We played very well for 50 minutes," said Saints head coach Fran Grembowicz. "There were some encouraging developments over the course of the game. Our passing play was able to get back on track. We're looking forward to competing on Sunday."

In the first quarter, neither team was able to score. Within 10 seconds of each other in the second minute, the Herons took two shots at Walsh. Both were blocked. In the fourth minute, Mayson Blondek took a shot wide of the goal. With the clock running down to 30 seconds in the first, Charlotte Lehr also attempted a shot on goal. That attempt was blocked by the Herons' goalkeeper.

Looking to break through, the Scarlet and Brown came out strong. With a penalty corner by Blondek, the Saints scored their lone goal of the day. Shaw got through the Herons' defense to take a 1-0 lead. Shortly after, Lily Gubbins had a chance to double the lead, but her shot was blocked. The Herons would then even the score in the 20th minute. Less than a minute later, they scored again to take their first lead of the match.

The third quarter was relatively quiet with both teams unable to generate high-end scoring opportunities. The Herons kept possession for most of the quarter. The Saints held their own against an aggressive offense, but the Herons scored in the last 23 seconds of the quarter. That secured their two-goal lead, which they held for the rest of the game.

In the last 10 minutes, the Saints had an extra attacker due to a William Smith green card. While that provided some momentum, the Saints were unable to cut into the lead.

The Saints are back in Canton on Sunday, October 5, for another Liberty League match. The Saints play Rochester at 1 p.m.
