The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team couldn't overcome a fast start from SUNY Cortland, falling 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field during Laurentian Weekend.
St. Lawrence fell to 3-2-2 with the loss, while the Red Dragons improved to 4-2-1.
Cortland struck early, getting their first goal in the 8
th minute from Piper Klammer, and their lead was doubled by Tyla Vuotto, who scored in the 13
th minute.
The Red Dragons tacked on two more goals in the final seven minutes of the first half with goals from Reese Edwards and Dana Scruggs.
Meredith Donahue,
Zoe Rogan, and
Maddie Needham all had looks at the goal, but were turned away by Olivia Rouse.
Play leveled off in the second half, but the Cortland defense held strong.
Madison King-Thurber,
Kiki D'Anza,
Lily Murphy, and
Sofia Manne were all able to get shots on the Red Dragon frame, but Cortland would preserve their clean sheet.
Goalkeeper
Zoe Davenport made three saves in the loss, while Cortland's Olivia Rouse and Rebecca Nazer combined for the shutout, with Rouse stopping six shots in 82 minutes of action, and Nazer stopping the lone shot she faced.
Both teams had 13 shots and seven shots on frame in the contest, but Cortland's pressure led to an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
St. Lawrence will head to the road next Wednesday, September 24, to take on Plattsburgh State in a 7 p.m. match under the lights.
