Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Lawrence Shines, Haslam Scores; No. 9 Saints Edge No. 5 Colgate in Exhibition Play

Kassidy Lawrence made 48 saves and first-year Rylan Haslam scored to lead the ninth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 1-0 win over No. 5 Colgate in exhibition play on Friday night in Hamilton, N.Y.

Both Kennedy Wilson and Ella Nancarrow got good looks for the Saints in the first period, and Saints goaltender Kassidy Lawrence got off to a hot start, making 11 saves in the first 20 minutes of play, including Emma Pais on a breakaway to keep the Raiders off the board at 9:34.

After the first 20 minutes of play, Colgate outshot the Saints 11-7 in shots on goal and faceoffs were tied up at eight apiece.

During the second period, back-to-back saves from Lawrence around the 13-minute mark continued to leave Colgate scoreless. Just after the saves, Cheyenne Degeer rushed Raiders' goaltender Farah Walker, but she made two leg saves to also keep the Saints off the board as well.

The Saints best play of the second came with 3:47 to play as Meghan Crowley went one-on-one with Walker, trying to go five hole, but she was turned away.

The Raiders got the better of the play in the second, holding a 31-14 advantage in shots on goal. Lawrence made 21 of her 48 saves in the second.
With 5:40 to play in the third, Haslam lit the lamp for the Saints, using her former junior teammate as a screen, she sent a beautiful wrister on net, which beat Walker five hole for the 1-0 lead. MacKenzie Clarke assisted on the play.

The Saints forced play to the outside and the Raiders pulled Walker around the two-minute mark, but the Scarlet and Brown held on for the exhibition win.

"It is always a great way to start the season playing Colgate in our exhibition game," said head coach Chris Wells. "Kass was wonderful in the net tonight and allowed us to stay in it and get good experience in a tight game vs. a top five team."

Lawrence recorded 48 stops, while Walker finished with 16.

Colgate finished with a 48-17 advantage in shots on goal but fell by a goal, while St. Lawrence successfully killed off all three power-play opportunities from the Raiders.

"We saw a lot of good efforts by everyone, and we were rewarded with the win," Wells added. "We now have some real good game situations to focus on in practice as we get ready for Penn State next week."

St. Lawrence will officially open the 2025-26 season at Penn State, as they take on the Nittany Lions next Thursday and Friday, September 25-26. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
