The St. Lawrence University field hockey team dropped their second contest at the William Smith tournament this weekend, falling to Gettysburg 2-1 in a closely contested contest.
The result brings the Saints' overall record to 3-2.
Gettysburg struck first, getting on the board five minutes into the first quarter. After a rush into the Saints' shooting circle, Jillian Somers gathered the ricochet of a defensive save and one-timed it past
Elizabeth Walsh to make it 1-0 Bullets. Gettysburg controlled the pace of play in the first, but St. Lawrence's stingy defense limited them to two shots on goal.
The Saints' defensive persistence turned into offense in the second quarter, when
Lily Gubbins added her second goal of the 2025 campaign with a hard shot that beat the Bullets' netminder. That evened the score at 1-1, and it remained that way until halftime.
After a competitive third quarter, Cianna Miranda beat the horn and re-took the lead with a last-second goal to make it 2-1. That stood as the final.
Walsh made key saves throughout the game, keeping her team within striking distance until the final buzzer. She made 13 saves in the contest.
The Saints will resume their road schedule with an in-state matchup at Hamilton College on Wednesday, September 17 before returning home to begin league play against Skidmore on Saturday, September 27.
