D'Anza and Habinowski Power Second-Half Surge in 2-1 Win at Oswego State

The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to rally past Oswego State, earning a 2-1 road win on Saturday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium in Oswego, N.Y.

The Saints improved to 2-1-2 on the season with the win, while the Lakers dropped to 3-2-1.

"We didn't start the way we wanted to," said head coach Dima Kaliakin. "Credit to the team for finding a way to pick up a win on the road against a well-coached Oswego side.

Oswego State struck early, taking a 1-0 lead just 3:14 into the match when Kyla Sustad finished off a pass from Luz De Luna Catano-Matip.

The Lakers held that advantage into halftime despite a pair of quality chances from Grace Gibson and Kaitlyn Barton, both of which were turned aside by Oswego goalkeeper Paytyn Crane. Madison King-Thurber and Zoe Rogan also had chances to knot the game but missed the woodwork.

St. Lawrence would find its rhythm in the second half. Kiki D'Anza leveled the match in the 53rd minute with a long strike. Meredith Donahue sent D'Anza the ball from the right side, and she proceeded to launch a shot that was deflected by a defender and past the goalkeeper to equalize.

The Saints continued to press and were rewarded in the 77th minute. Chloe Bourque had a throw-in for the Scarlet and Brown in Laker territory and found Brooke Habinowski. The sophomore fired a high shot that bounced over the keeper and in to give her team the lead. The goal was the first career goal and points for the second-year midfielder.

Zoe Davenport faced three shots the rest of the way and came up with two key saves, while the St. Lawrence backline helped guide the third shot wide.

Davenport anchored the Saints in goal, making three saves, while Crane stopped one of the three she faced.

St. Lawrence held a 9-7 edge in shots, but the Lakers led 4-3 in shots on goal and 3-2 in corner kicks.

The Scarlet and Brown return to action next week with a cross-town matchup on the road against SUNY Canton on Tuesday, September 16 at 7 p.m.
