The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team got goals from
Dennis Argueta and
Sammy Bothwell, and a shutout from
Zach Amato as the team earned its first win of the season with a 2-0 derby victory over SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon at Canton Turf Field.
With the win, the Saints improved to 1-4-0, while the Roos dropped to 1-6-0.
"It was a good performance from the team today," said head coach
Mike Toshack. "A lot of our guys played and contributed to this win against a team that is tough to beat. Those were two well-taken goals from Argueta and from Bothwell, who scored his first college goal. We also had a good clean sheet today for Amato, and our defensive unit worked really hard. Now we build and look forward to our match against SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday in our last test before League play."
Argueta opened the scoring in the 23rd minute for the Scarlet and Brown after applying plenty of early pressure. The play was started by
Ryan Campbell, who found himself with space through the middle of the pitch, and put a shot on Nolan Sullivan. The shot was stopped and bounced out to
Henry Hart, who found Argueta, who finished his strike to take the lead.
St. Lawrence nearly struck again towards the end of the half with shots from
Cam Moyers, Bothwell, and
Jeremy Ogango. Moyers and Bothwell each saw their shots stopped, while Ogango's ball struck the post to keep the score at 1-0 at the half. Â
The Saints continued to apply pressure and ended up doubling their lead in the 71st minute. Captain
Nicholas Petrone was the initial catalyst of the play, finding Moyers in space with a cross. The first-year found his classmate Bothwell, who buried the shot for a 2-0 lead. Bothwell's goal served as his first collegiate tally and first college points.
St. Lawrence controlled the pace throughout the rest of the second half to secure the 2-0 win.
The Scarlet and Brown offense paced SUNY Canton 16-3 in shot attempts and 8-1 in shots on goal. Their pressure earned them seven corner kicks to the Roos' one.
Amato earned his first career win and first career shutout in the victory, stopping the lone shot he faced. Sullivan and his backup Joey Raap each came up with three saves on four shots for the Roos.
St. Lawrence returns home next Wednesday, September 17, at 4:30 p.m. when the Saints host SUNY Potsdam at Sandy MacAllaster Field in their final non-conference match of the season.
