Lily Gubbins had two goals, and
Elizabeth Walsh combined with
Petra Gamage to record another shutout as the St. Lawrence University field hockey team moved to 2-0 on the season. They blanked Utica 5-0 in the final game of the North Country Invitational.
"I'm very pleased with the effort we put forward from start to finish this weekend," said Saints head coach
Fran Grembowicz. "Everyone performed well on the field. Our composure and communication were excellent all weekend. We managed a terrific passing game and defensively we really stepped up to support our keepers."
St. Lawrence wasted no time getting on the scoresheet, with their first goal coming just 1:24 into the game.
Mayson Blondek lugged the ball down the right flank and crossed it into
Lily Gubbins, who one-timed it into the net.
The second St. Lawrence goal came in similar fashion at the end of the first quarter, with
Sydney LeClair making a dart toward the left post and taking a hard pass from
Caroline Hamilton, directing it off the right post and in to make it 2-0.
The third goal came on a net-mouth scramble where
Caroline Hamilton took a pass from
Charlotte Lehr and deposited it behind Utica netminder Ismiah ChinQuee to make it 3-0.
Maggie Spire made it 4-0 in the second quarter, then the Gubbins sisters teamed up to make it a five-goal SLU lead before the half – as
Lily Gubbins knocked in her second goal of the game on a pass by
Hannah Gubbins.
The Scarlet and Brown outshot the Pioneers 24-9, including 16 shots in the first half. In the St. Lawrence cage, Walsh recorded four saves while the first-year Gamage turned aside one shot in her collegiate debut.
Lily Gubbins led the shot totals for St. Lawrence, firing four, while LeClair,
Mayson Blondek and
Jane Bartlett recorded three.
The Saints will next play Saturday on the road, when they hit I-81 and trek down to Bethlehem, Pa. to play Moravian University in another non-conference game.
