Season Recap: Saints Advance to NCAA Third Round, Marinello Named Goalie of the Year

The St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team ended the season ranked 11th nationally in the Inside Lacrosse rankings and 13th nationally in the USILA Coaches Poll, as they advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, and six Saints earned USILA All-American honors to highlight the 2025 season.

Under the direction of head coach Mike Mahoney, who completed his 28th season and earned his 300th-career win with the Scarlet and Brown, Michael Marinello was named the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Outstanding Goalie of the Year. He also earned USILA First-Team All-America honors, IMLCA Second-Team All-America honors, USA Lacrosse Second-Team All-America honors, ILMCA All-Region, All-Liberty League and was selected for the USILA DIII Senior All-Star Game.

"Mike had a tremendous year for us and particularly down the stretch of the regular season and post season, he played a pivotal role in our success," said Mahoney. "To be named goalie of the year was certainly a amazing honor for him and for our program."

The Scarlet and Brown opened the season early with a double-overtime 12-11 win over Western New England and a 11-9 win over No. 15 St. John Fisher. After a postponement, the Saints fell at Cortland, but rebounded with a 17-5 win over Nazareth.
The Saints then headed to Stevenson, Md. Over spring break to the highly competitive Mustang Classic. SLU ultimately fell to No. 13 Washington & Lee and No. 14 Stevenson, in two tightly contested games.

St. Lawrence jumped into Liberty League play, posting wins over Vassar, Ithaca, Clarkson. The Saints also added a 7-6 win over No. 14 Middlebury, before posting back-to-back wins over No. 5/6 RPI just six days apart to advance to the Liberty League Championship game.

The Saints' first win over the Engineers on senior day earned them a bye and home turf in the Liberty League semifinals. SLU fought for a 9-6 win and six days later topped the Engineers once again, 9-7. The championship game came down to the final seconds, as the No. 3 RIT Tigers managed to hold on for an 11-10 win.

The Saints were selected to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and headed to Medford, Mass. St. Lawrence faced off against Middlebury for the second time in 2025, topping the Panthers to 10-9 to advance to the third round to play the eventual National Champions – Tufts University.

In total, the Saints played 10 games against nationally ranked opponents, winning five, in 2025 including five wins over teams that played in the NCAA Tournament.

"This was a season unlike any that I can remember in my career, as far as the number of games that went right down to wire," Mahoney added. "With 12 one or two goal games, we had to walk a tight rope to achieve some of our goals as a team, and to their credit, they did just that. We were essentially playing "playoff lacrosse" from the end of March until the second weekend of May, and due to amazing leadership and resilience of the players, as well as the commitment to a plan, they created a memorable season that we will all look back on with a great amount of pride."

Marinello, Charlie Miele, Daniel Mahoney, Bobby Wells, Caleb Torres and Padraic Condon were tabbed USILA All-America honorees to close out the season.

Marinello, the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Outstanding Goalie of the Year became the third Saint in program history to win a major USILA award, the first since P.J. Santora won Specialty Player of the Year in 2009, and just the second goaltender to earn both First Team and Goaltender of the Year honors since John Fowler in 1980.

Marinello backstopped the Saints in 2025 and recorded 245 saves for an 8.85 goals against average and a .600 save percentage. He ranked third on the team with 42 ground balls and caused eight turnovers. Marinello's save percentage topped the Liberty League, while his goals against average ranked fifth and his 12.89 saves per game ranks second.

Miele, a Third-Team All-America selection, led the Saints defense with 25 caused turnovers and ranked second on the squad with 44 ground balls. He ranked seventh in the conference with 1.32 caused turnovers per game. Miele and the Saints' defense helped hold opponents to single digits, scoring just 8.78 goals per game.

Mahoney, Wells, Torres and Condon all received All-America Honorable Mention accolades.

Mahoney led the Saints' offense with 38 goals and 19 assists for 57 points on the season. He scored two game winners, two man-up goals, picked up 42 ground balls and caused three turnovers. Mahoney tallied three or more points in 13 of 19 games this season, including a career-best five goals against St. John Fisher and four in the regular season game against Middlebury.

Wells, a force from the midfield, scored 30 goals and added 13 assists for 43 points on the season. He scored four game winners, six man-up goals, picked up 22 ground balls and caused two turnovers. In the final months of the season, Wells recorded a hat trick against Clarkson, RPI, RIT, and Middlebury in the second-round of the NCAA Tournament.

A short-stick midfielder, Torres picked up 29 ground balls, caused 11 turnovers, scored five goals and added an assist for six points.

Condon, a seasoned veteran at the faceoff dot, won 233 faceoffs for a 57.8 faceoff percentage in 2025. He picked up 147 ground balls, scored four goals, added three assists and caused one turnover.

Aside from the Saints' success on the field this season, 21 Saints earned Liberty League All-Academic accolades, while Torres earned CSC Academic All-District honors and three Saints were nominated for USILA Scholar All-America, which has not been released yet. As a team, St. Lawrence posted a 3.347 cumulative team GPA following the spring semester.

In 2025, the Saints graduated 11 seniors – Bobby Bartlett, Padraic Condon, Zack Corsi, Henry Hoyt, Michael Marinello, Griffin Marx, Charlie Miele, Sam Smith, Nate Stevens, Caleb Torres, and Bobby Wells.
