The eighth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team embarked on a remarkable season, including a trip to the NCAA Regional Finals, making it to the semifinals of the ECAC Championships, multiple All-ECAC accolades, a Hockey Commissioners Association Goalie of the Year Semifinalist, a ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year Finalist, and the 2024-25 Hockey Humanitarian Award Winner and Sarah Devens Award Recipient in
Sarah Thompson.
Head Coach
Chris Wells, who recorded his 300th career win in 2025, was named a ECAC Coach of the Year Finalist for the second consecutive season in his 17th season at the helm for the Saints, with an overall record of 22-12-5, and a conference record of 13-6-3, which was good enough for the Skating Saints to stay ranked all season getting as high as seventh in the country. They claimed the third seed in the ECAC Tournament, locking in a first-round bye and home ice in the quarterfinals. Once there, they swept Yale in two games at Appleton Arena and advanced to Cornell for the semifinals, where they fell to Colgate 4-2 to end their ECAC run, but their season was not over yet.
Even with missing out on the ECAC Championship game, the Saints earned an at-large bid for the second consecutive season, marking their 11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history. They traveled to Columbus, Ohio to face off against No. 7 Penn State at OSU. The Saints took down the Nittany Lions 4-1 to book their ticket to the NCAA Regional Finals against second-ranked Ohio State. Even though they found the back of the net in the first period, they eventually fell 6-1 to the Buckeyes to end their remarkable season.
"It was another exciting and memorable season for our team," said Wells. "Our experience really helped us get through the first part of the season and to achieve another NCAA tournament. We had a great second half that included our first win at Cheel in regulation time since 2010! The Yale playoff series was as tough as we expected and gave us a great boost to play well out in Columbus vs. Penn State and Ohio State."
Along with their 2024-2025 campaign, multiple individual awards and accolades came with it.
Thompson was presented the 2025 Hockey Humanitarian Award and the 2025 Sarah Devens Award Recipient for her work with her non-profit organization Sticks Together.
Sticks Together aims to provide the necessary resources to give children in underprivileged communities the opportunity to learn and play the sport of hockey. As a part of the initiative, we donate recycled hockey equipment and teach the game to students around the world. Our vision is to give children an escape from their everyday life and share the joy of playing sport with young children who may not have the opportunity otherwise. Â
Thompson is the 30th honoree of both awards. She becomes the first from St. Lawrence University to be honored with the Hockey Humanitarian Award. Thompson and the Saints are currently in Kenya, bringing Sticks Together to multiple communities.
Abby Hustler led the Scarlet and Brown offensively with 19 goals and 20 assists for 39 points on the season. She was tabbed Second-Team All-ECAC Hockey, the ECAC Forward of the Month for March, and named St. Lawrence's Martha Finch Outstanding Senior Female Athlete.
Anna Segedi and
Aly McLeod both notched 10 goals and 14 assists each to finish with 24 points on the season. Segedi was named to the Third-Team All-ECAC Hockey for her efforts this season.
Emma-Sofie Nordström was the anchor between the pipes, as she started 36 games for the Saints, while making 889 saves, good for a .934 save percentage and a 1.77 goals against average. She earned Third-Team All-ECAC Hockey honors, was a three-time MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week and was a semifinalist for the Hockey Commissioners Association Goalie of the Year award. She played for Team Denmark in goal, taking place in the final round of the Olympic Qualifying games.
Taylor Lum picked up nine goals and seven assists for 16 points on the season, was a nominee for the Mandi Schwartz Student Athlete of the Year award and was named St. Lawrence's Scott Woodburn Senior Female Scholar-Athlete.
McLeod and
Sarah Marchand signed with MoDo Hockey in Sweden, while
Melissa Jefferies signed with Frölunda HC. Segedi and Hustler have both declared for the 2025 PWHL Draft, which takes place on Tuesday, June 24th, at 7:00 p.m. at Hard Rock Live in Ottawa, Ontario.
"Off the ice our team was able to make their mark as well with academic success and
Sarah Thompson being named the Hockey Humanitarian Award winner," Wells added. "This was a special group of athletes this season. We look forward to seeing our great fans again around Appleton next season"
This successful season for the Scarlet and Brown also featured many other accolades listed below and credit to such a remarkable season goes to all members of the 2024-25 roster for their contributions both on and off the ice.
