Saints Upset No. 14 Middlebury in Tuesday Tilt

Daniel Mahoney tallied four goals and a strong second-half from the St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team propelled them to a 7-6 upset against No. 14 Middlebury on Tuesday afternoon at North Country Field in Canton, N.Y.

SLU sits at 7-4 overall, as they extend their win streak to four, and Middlebury drops to 7-5 on the season.

Ethan Friedberg, Cam Croasdaile, and David Herlihy all put in a goal, while Jamie Rosenzweig had an assist in the effort. Sam Wade lead the team on defense with two caused turnovers, and Padraic Condon went 10-17 on faceoffs and scooped up five ground balls.

The Panthers struck first with just under 10 minutes to go in the first, as Patrick Jamin found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Friedberg matched their goal off an assist from Rosenzweig to tie it up at one. Middlebury regained the lead after scoring two more goals including squeezing one in with 16 seconds left in the quarter to take a 3-1 lead.

Mahoney cut the lead down under a minute into the second, as he fired one in to cut their deficit to one. The Panthers responded by once again sinking back-to-back goals to extend their lead to three. Mahoney scored his second goal of the quarter as he dove across the crease and squeezed in a shot to put them within two, but Middlebury led 5-3 at the break.

The Saints surged in the third as they shutout Middlebury and put in three goals in the process. Herlihy rifled one in, and Mahoney added two more goals to his total, to give the Saints the 6-5 lead heading into the fourth.

Croasdaile got things started finding his first goal of the game a minute and a half into the last quarter to grab a two-goal lead. The Panthers didn't let the Saints pull away, as they matched their goal to cut the lead back down to one with 7:46 to go. Strong defense and goaltending from Michael Marinello held them off for the remainder of the game, including a clutch save with 30 seconds left to help them escape with the 7-6 win.

"That was a gutsy effort in some great North Country spring conditions," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "Our defense was stout, our goalie made some big time stops and our offense stepped up at opportune times. Really proud of the team and look forward to building on it as we head into a difficult Liberty League stretch."

Marinello recorded 10 saves for the Saints, as Hayden Kern finished with nine saves for the Panthers.

The Scarlet and Brown will once again play at North Country Field, taking on Ithaca for a Liberty League matchup Saturday, April 12th in Canton, N.Y.
