The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team came from behind to bring the game back within one, but fell to 19th-ranked Ithaca 10-7 on Saturday afternoon in Ithaca, N.Y.
Jessica LaPlaca led the Saints with three goals, while Pheobe Spaeth and
Neve Ley both put in two goals in the effort. Ley's first of the day marked her 100th-career point in Scarlet and Brown.
Brigette Gable led the way on defense with four caused turnovers, as
Kelsey O'Brien picked up a team-high six ground balls. Ley led the team in draw controls with five, while
Ruthie Haims picked up three.
The Saints were held scoreless in the first, as Ithaca put in two goals to take a 2-0 lead.
LaPlaca got the Saints on the board in the second, as she found the back of the net two minutes into the quarter. Lily Cody scored off a free position shot to give Ithaca back their two-goal lead, until Spaeth scored off an assist from
Keira Dodd to make it a 3-2 game before half.
Ithaca was the first to strike out of the break, yet Ley matched it to put them back within one. Ithaca proceeded to go on a four-goal run to close out the third to give the Bombers the 8-3 lead.
SLU opened the fourth with a run of their own to get back into the game, as LaPlaca scored two more goals with Ley and Spaeth chipping in with her to make it 8-7 with 6:22 left to play. It would not be enough however, as the Saints took some cards, which allowed the Bombers to put in two more and pull away with the 10-7 win.
"I am proud of the run our team put together in the fourth," said head coach
Tom Ryan. "It was a glimpse of what's possible and it was exciting to be a part of. Our even up defense was solid all afternoon and we just need to avoid a few of the unnecessary fouls, and we have a different result."
Zoe Froimovitz recorded five saves for the Saints, as Ithaca's Mikaela Dattilo had nine saves.
The Saints fell to 4-6 and 2-3 in conference play, while the Bombers improved to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the Liberty League.
SLU returns to action Wednesday, April 9th at 5:30 p.m., when they take on No. 1 Middlebury in Middlebury, Vt.
