Mahoney Captures 300th Career Win; Herlihy, Marinello Lead Saints at Vassar

David Herlihy put in three goals and Michael Marinello made 16 saves, as the St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team topped Vassar 10-5 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon.

With today's win, head coach Mike Mahoney, who became the all-time winningest head coach in St. Lawrence men's lacrosse history in 2022, captured his 300th career victory with the Scarlet and Brown during his 28th season.

The Saints rise to 6-4 overall, and 2-1 in Liberty League play, while Vassar drops to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Daniel Mahoney had two goals and an assist on the day, as Bobby Wells, Patrick Murray, Padraic Condon, Cam Croasdaile, and Ethan Friedberg all contributed a goal in the victory.

On the defensive side Michael Miele, and Charlie Miele both had two caused turnovers, as Condon went 9-17 in faceoffs picking up eight ground balls in the process.

Murray kicked things off for SLU, as he was the first to find the net three minutes into the game, Vassar fired back with a goal of their own to tie it up at one. Wells, Condon, and Herlihy each put in a goal for a three-goal run the Saints had to put them up three, until Shane O'Hara squeezed one in for Vassar under the last minute of the first to make it a 4-2 game.

The Scarlet and Brown held Vassar scoreless in the second, as Croasdaile and Mahoney scored eight seconds apart from each other, giving the Saints a 6-2 lead going into the half.

Vassar began to claw back, putting in two straight goals to begin the second half and cutting the lead to two once again. However, the Saints responded with a pair of goals from Friedberg and Herlihy to give them back the four-goal spread.

Herlihy sunk a goal three minutes into the final quarter of play to put them up five, Vassar was not going away easily as Drew Mazzocco matched it to cut the deficit back to four. Mahoney sealed the game with one last goal, as SLU held onto the lead and pulled away with the 10-5 win.

"A good workmanlike effort today," said Mahoney. "Some solid defense, timely goals and saves. We hope to continue to build on this as we head into the last third of the regular season. We are certainly excited for a true home game on Tuesday!"

Marinello matched his season-high 16 saves, while Drew Quinn had 10 saves for Vassar.

St. Lawrence outshot Vassar 39-35, but the Brewers led 22-20 in shots on goal. The Saints converted on 1-of-3 man-up opportunities and picked up 35 ground balls to Vassar's 28.

SLU returns to North Country Field on Tuesday, April 8th at 4 p.m., as they faceoff against Middlebury in Canton, N.Y.
