Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Mike Nunnally

Marinello Stops 18, Saints Fall to No. 3 RIT on the Road

Michael Marinello made a season-best 18 saves on the day, and Henry Crean scored two goals as the St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team fell 14-5 third-ranked RIT on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.

Bobby Wells, Daniel Mahoney, and Ethan Friedberg all put in a goal in the effort. On the defensive side, Caleb Torres had a team-high two caused turnovers, and Padraic Condon went 13-22 in faceoffs, along with nine ground balls.

The Tigers came out firing, scoring four-straight goals in the first. Friedberg was able to break their streak near the end of the quarter and deliver a goal to make it a 4-1 contest.

Neither team scored in the second until the 5:45 mark, where Crean found his first goal on the day to put them within two. RIT was once again able to go back up four, as they found two more goals before the half ended to make it 6-2.

The Tigers kicked off the second half by going on another two-goal run to go up six. Crean found another goal, and Mahoney put one in to cut the lead back to four. RIT found the net once more in the quarter to make it 9-4 heading into the final frame.

Wells scored to start the four, bringing it back within four once again, but that would be as close as the Saints got, as RIT scored five unanswered goals and closed the game out to win 14-5.

"We ran into a good team that makes you earn everything on both ends of the field," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "I think we responded well early and got settled in, and I can't fault the effort at all, but some untimely goals against early and late in the periods were difficult to overcome."

"We look forward to hitting the reset button, and having a great week of practice in preparation of another great opportunity next weekend," Mahoney added.

Along with Marinello, Heath Mann saw the field and had a save for the Saints, as Alex Zborowski made 15 saves for RIT.

SLU moved to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the Liberty League, as RIT improves to 15-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play.

The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action at home for senior day, as they take on RPI Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m., at North Country Field in their last regular season game.
