No. 20 Saints Stun No. 5 RPI with Upset Win on Senior Day; Wells Picks Up 100th Career Point

Bobby Wells tallied his 100th career point and Michael Marinello made a season-best 21 saves, as the No. 20 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team stunned fifth-ranked RPI with a 9-6 upset win on Saturday afternoon for senior day at North Country Field in Canton, N.Y.

Henry Hoyt, Charlie Miele, Zack Corsi, Sam Smith, Michael Marinello, Bobby Bartlett, Caleb Torres, Nate Stevens, Griffin Marx, Bobby Wells, Padraic Condon and student manager Joel Asare were all honored and recognized in a post game ceremony.

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in the Liberty League and secured the second seed in the upcoming Liberty League playoffs. RPI fell to 14-2 and 5-2, respectively.

Daniel Mahoney had four goals, and Wells recorded a hat trick along with two assists, surpassing 100 career points. Charlie Cunningham found his first goal of the season, while Jamie Rosenzweig also scored for the Saints. On defense, Michael Miele caused three turnovers and picked up five ground balls, while Padraic Condon won eight face offs and picked up three ground balls.

Mahoney kicked off the game by finding the back of the net to jump to an early 1-0 lead. RPI matched his goal at the 6:29 mark in the first to tie it. Bobby Wells scored his first of the game to give the Saints a one-goal lead heading into the second.

SLU ramped up the intensity in the second, as great defense held RPI scoreless in the quarter. Bobby Wells put in two more goals to complete his hat trick and Cunningham rifled in his first shot of the season hold a 5-1 lead heading into the half.

Mahoney and Rosenzweig teamed up once again to start the third to go up five. RPI responded with a goal of their own, but Mahoney answered once again to complete his hat trick as they grabbed a 7-2 lead. The Engineers began to chip at the lead, putting in a pair of shots to cut the deficit to three heading into the fourth.

Cooper Roman cut the deficit to two for RPI to continue their comeback attempt, but Rosenzweig fired in a goal, and Mahoney found his fourth to seal the game. RPI scored one more, but it wouldn't matter, as St. Lawrence pulled off the 9-6 upset.

"What a great way for our senior class to cap their regular season career," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "I thought we came out focused and competed so hard in every aspect of the game. I am so proud of the 11 seniors and the entire team, who earned a great victory on a special day!"

Marinello put up a season-best 20 saves in the upset, while Joseph Parry was right behind him with 16 saves for RPI.

RPI held a slight 27-25 edge in shots on goal, while the Saints led in ground balls 31-25 and converted on two of three man-up opportunities.

The second-seeded Saints will host third-seeded RPI in the Liberty League semifinals on Friday, May 2nd at North Country Field. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
