Wells Leads Fourth Quarter Surge; Saints Claim Route 11 Rivalry Win, 9-7

A fourth quarter surge, plus a hat trick and three assists from Bobby Wells propelled the St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to the 9-7 win against Clarkson in the Route 11 showdown Wednesday afternoon at North Country Field in Canton, N.Y.

The Saints extend their win streak to six rising to 9-4 overall, and 4-1 in the Liberty League, as Clarkson drops 8-6 overall, and 1-4 in the conference standings.

Wells' six points in today's game was a career best for the senior. David Herlihy and Jamie Rosenzweig put in two goals each in the effort, while Zack Corsi and Ethan Friedberg both scored. On defense, Sam Smith caused a team-high four turnovers, as Bobby Bartlett followed up with three caused turnovers, and Padraic Condon went 14-19 in faceoffs and scooped up 11 ground balls.

The Scarlet and Brown were first to strike, as Rosenzweig snuck in a goal with one second on the shot clock off a dish from Mahoney three minutes into the first. The Golden Knights responded quickly, matching their goal to tie it up at one. Wells took the lead back for the Saints with a goal of his own, ending the first quarter, 2-1.

The second quarter was back and forth, as Clarkson scored back-to-back goals to give themselves the 3-2 lead. The Saints were not down for long, Friedberg and Corsi both found the back of the net to regain the one-goal lead. However, the Golden Knights sunk another pair of goals, as they claimed the 5-4 lead heading into the half.

Both teams displayed strong defense, as neither team scored in the first 10 minutes of the second half, yet the Golden Knights were able to extend their lead late in the third. Connor Matthews rifled in the only goal of the quarter giving Clarkson a two-goal lead.

St. Lawrence surged in the fourth, Wells and Herlihy put in two goals each to grab the 8-6 lead. Clarkson didn't go away easily, as they fired in a goal with 3:25 remaining to make it a one goal game once again. Rosenzweig shut the door on the Golden Knights, scoring from the doorstep to give the Saints their two-goal lead back.

"Well, that was what I expected," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "Clarkson is a very well coached, tough team and they took it to us for stretches of that game. Hats off to the guys for staying with it and having a great fourth quarter. We need to continue to get better, but I love the ability to dig down and find a way!"

Michael Marinello had 14 saves in the effort, while Griffen Emerson had six for Clarkson.

The Scarlet and Brown held the advantage in ground balls (39-29) and caused turnovers (11-10), while the Golden Knights held the edge in shots (39-26)

SLU will head on the road for their last regular season away match, as they take on the RIT Tigers on Saturday, April 19 in Rochester, N.Y., at 1 p.m.
