Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball's Offense Comes Alive in Game Two for a DH Split Versus Vassar

After starting on the mound in game one, the bat of senior Timothy Connor came alive in game two to help lead the St. Lawrence University baseball team to a split with Vassar on Monday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

St. Lawrence moved to 8-16 overall and 4-6 in Liberty League play, while the Brewers went to 10-13 and 2-6 in league action.

After not scoring in game one, the offense produced nine runs in game two to split the twin bill. Connor led the way in the second game with a double, a triple, and four RBI from the dish. Eddie Morrissey, John Gannon, and Eoin Morrissey also drove runs home in the win.

Game one: St. Lawrence 0, Vassar 7 (9 Innings)

Game one was a pitcher's duel early with both teams being held to just one apiece through the top of the fourth.

The 0-0 tie was broken in the bottom half of the fourth when a single down the right field line turned into two Brewer runs. After the single, the next batter was walked, and both were driven home by a triple to centerfield to give Vassar the 2-0 lead.

The rest of the damage was done in the bottom of the sixth, where three singles and a double consecutively made it 5-0. An RBI single and double later in the inning made it 7-0.

The Saints were only able to get one runner in scoring position the rest of the way in the loss.

Connor, who started on the mound for the first time in his career, pitched four innings, giving up just three hits and two runs while striking out two Brewers. Liam Hickey pitched 1.2 innings in relief, followed by Michael Flyzik (1.1), and James Morr (1.0).

Game two: St. Lawrence 9, Vassar 4 (9 Innings)

The Scarlet and Brown offense woke up in game two, scoring a run in the top of the first. Mike Siano led the game off with a single and was advanced to scoring position by a walk. Eddie Morrissey delivered an RBI single on the first pitch he saw to give the Saints the lead.

Vassar tied the contest in the bottom of the second with an RBI double but lost the lead in the next half-inning.

In the top of the third, the inning was started by a hit by pitch and a walk to Eddie Morrissey to put the Saints in business. Gannon delivered a run with a single to right field, and Morrissey came around to score on a throwing error to make it 3-0.

The Brewers once again got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, but the Scarlet and Brown hung a three on the board in the top of the fifth. A two-out walk, hit by pitch, and a wild pitch set up Connor, who scorched a triple to right center to bring in two runs. He came around to score himself on a wild pitch to make it a 6-2 game.

Vassar chipped away with single runs to get to within two, but the Saints put the game away in the ninth. Eoin Morrissey took advantage of a one-out walk and a single from Sean Desjardins to bring in a run for the road team with a single to right field. St. Lawrence made it a five-run game two at-bats later when Connor roped a double to the center field wall to score Morrissey and Desjardins.

Ryan McCausland got the start on the bump, pitching three innings, giving up just one run on four hits. Shota Kubota, Joe LaPrade, Joshua Polumbo, and Noah Spaulding combined to pitch the next 4.2 innings, while Brendan Karadenes earned a save, pitching the last 1.1 innings, giving up no hits, no runs, and striking out a batter.

Next up:

St. Lawrence will dip their toes out of league play on Wednesday when the team heads to Plattsburgh to take on the Cardinals in a 3:30 p.m. contest.
