Sophomore
Matt Davis was able to squeeze a run home in the contest, but the Saints were unable to plate another as the St. Lawrence University baseball team fell 5-1 to Trinity on Friday evening at Tom Fay Field.
St. Lawrence fell to 7-13 with the loss, while the Bantams improved to 9-13.
David Zuhlsdorf started on the mound in the contest and sent Trinity down in order. The Saints got a baserunner in the bottom half of the first but were unable to advance him with back-to-back fly outs.
A leadoff walk to the Bantams in the top of the second turned into a jam for Zuhlsdorf, who struck out a batter before surrendering a single and a walk to load the bases. The southpaw fanned the next batter and forced a fly out to work his way through the jam.
Brett Federico got things rolling for the Scarlet and Brown in the bottom half of the second, reaching on an error. A
Willie Landman single pushed the fifth year to third and on the doorstep of the lead. Davis would lay down a squeeze bunt, and Federico slid under a tag to give the Saints the lead.
Trinity tied the ball game in the next half-inning and proceeded to score a single run in each of the next two to take a 3-1 lead after five.
The lead increased for the Bantams at the top of the seventh when a walk and a home run to left field increased the lead to 5-1.
St. Lawrence made some noise in the bottom of the ninth when a two-out single from
Eddie Morrissey and a hit by pitch put two runners on. Trinity would secure the final out on a flyout to end the contest.
Zuhlsdorf finished the day with five innings pitched, striking out six and allowing three runs.
Joshua Polumbo was the first out of the pen in relief, pitching 1.1 innings, followed by
Michael Flyzik, who struck out two and gave up no hits in 1.2 innings of work. Seniors
Jared Brenner and
Sam Fosberg combined for the final inning of the contest.
Both teams will line it up again tomorrow for a doubleheader at Tom Fay Field starting at noon.
