A strong first half from the 11th-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team propelled them past Nazareth, as 10 different players scored a goal or more in the 17-5 victory at the SUNY Canton Turf Field in Canton, N.Y on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Bobby Wells led the way with his team-high four goals, while juniors
Sean Wiseman,
Cam Croasdaile, and
David Herlihy, and first-year
Jamie Rosenzweig, all put in two goals each. Sophomore
Henry Crean, and junior
Ceron White each recorded their first career goals for the Saints, as
Caleb Torres,
Daniel Mahoney and
Padraic Condon also found the back of the net. Mahoney led the team in assists with four.
On defense, senior
Charlie Miele led the team with two caused turnovers, as nine other Saints recorded one caused turnover. Junior
Ted Wilson picked up four ground balls, as Condon went 16-25 in faceoffs, along with scooping up 11 ground balls.
In the first quarter the Scarlet and Brown came out hot, as Wells and Torres scored the first two goals of the game to give them the lead. At 10:51, Matthew Farrington put in the first goal for Nazareth to cut the lead to one. The Saints responded with five straight goals without an answer, until Nazareth found the back of the net again with 14 seconds left to end the quarter 7-2.
St. Lawrence kept on rolling in the second, as they continued to put on an offensive show. Rosenzweig put in the first goal of the quarter at 10:59 to extend their lead to six. A minute and a half later, Nazareth answered right back to make it an 8-3 game. The Saints went on another run, as they scored three-straight to give SLU the 11-3 lead at the half.
The momentum from the first half carried over, as St. Lawrence found the back of the net three more times without an answer to extend their lead to 11 heading into the fourth.
For the final quarter of play, Nazareth struck first to cut the Saints lead to 10. Mahoney fired in a goal with 9:31 left to play to increase their lead back to 11. Kyle Rosenberger attempted to spark a late comeback attempt for Nazareth once he scored to cut the lead back to ten, yet Wells and White each scored one goal and the game ended in a 17-5 win for St. Lawrence.
"I thought it was a a great response by the team today," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "Getting off to a great start was helpful and I'm really proud of the effort. We look forward to the challenge ahead of the Mustang Classic and the start of Liberty League play at the end of our trip."
Both senior Michael Marnello, and Nazareth's Zac Issac had 11 saves on the day.
Heath Mann also saw some action for the Saints and made three saves.

The Saints improved to 3-1 on the season with the win, while Nazareth fell to 3-3.
The Scarlet and Brown will look to build on this win on Friday March 14th at 11:30 a.m., as they face Washington & Lee in the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic at Stevenson University in Stevenson, Md.
