Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Second Quarter Lifts No. 13 Washington and Lee Over No. 12 Saints

The No. 12 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team started out hot, but six goals in the second quarter helped power No. 13 Washington and Lee to a 12-10 win over the Saints in game one of the highly-competitive Callum Robinson Mustang Classic at Stevenson University on Friday morning.

Daniel Mahoney recorded a pair of goals and three assists, while Jamie Rosenzweig tallied two of each. Nate Stevens also snagged two goals and an assist, while David Herlihy, Henry Crean, Cam Croasdaile and Caleb Torres each scored once.

Charlie Miele and Bobby Bartlett each picked up three ground balls and caused one turnover, while goalie Michael Marinello picked up a team-best five ground balls and Sam Wade caused two turnovers for the Saints.

Goals from Mahoney, Herlihy and Rosensweig put the Saints in control at the start. Marinello and the Saints' defense locked down, holding the Generals to just one goal in the first, taking a 3-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.

The Generals used a strong second quarter, shutting out the Saints 6-0 to build a 7-3 lead at the break.

St. Lawrence battled back in the third, trading goals to start, but ultimately outscoring the Generals 3-1 to bring the game back within two at the start of the fourth quarter.

Back-to-back goals from Stevens knotted the game up 8-8 with 10:53 to play, but the Generals responded with two of their own to take back the two-goal spread. The Saints tied it up once again at 10-10 with goals from Croasdaile and Rosensweig, but Washington and Lee sealed the win with a pair of goals in the final four minutes of play.

"It was a great battle, that certainly had some momentum swings," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "The team showed a lot of resiliency and these types of games will only help us moving forward. We look forward to another opportunity to bounce back tomorrow."

James Haley and Hillis Burns both scored four goals each for the Generals, while Chris Datz picked up seven ground balls and Jay O'Keefe caused five turnovers.

Marinello made a season-high 14 saves, while Nick De Cain finished with 11 for Washington and Lee.

The Generals finished with a 44-30 advantage in shots and picked up 48 ground balls to St. Lawrence's 28.

With today's result both teams moved to 3-2 on the season.

The Saints will faceoff against host No. 14 Stevenson in the headliner game tomorrow, March 15 at 8:30 p.m.
