Connor Continues Production, Hutchins Spins Quality Start in Baseball's Doubleheader Split With SUNY Purchase

Michael Hutchins had a six-inning, zero earned-run start in game one, and Timothy Connor added a 3-for-4 day with two doubles as the St. Lawrence University baseball team split their doubleheader with the SUNY Purchase Panthers Saturday afternoon in Purchase, N.Y.

The Saints are an even 2-2 in non-conference play to open the season, with the Spring Break trip to Florida looming around the corner.

Hutchins was the Saints' offensive leader in game one, going six innings with six hits, no earned runs and fanning nine to help the Saints earn the 4-1 victory. Nothing went right for the Scarlet and Brown in game two, falling behind early in their 9-1 defeat.

Willie Landman had two hits across the pair of games including a home run and Brett Federico had a pair of hits as well with one run batted in.

David Zuhlsdorf recorded a save in the first game tossing a scoreless inning, while Joshua Palumbo and Brendan Karadenes both pitched shutout innings as well.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 4, SUNY Purchase 1 (7 Innings)

The Saints got on the board in the first inning after Connor walked, stole second and then John Gannon singled to score Connor from second, giving Hutchins a lead to work with.

Hutchins began with a hitless first three innings and struck out five to keep the Panthers off the scoreboard. However, in the fourth inning, Purchase got the offense going after a single, stolen base, followed by another single to tie it up at one.

The Saints didn't allow the game to be tied for long and in the top of the fifth, the Saints scored after back-to-back doubles from Connor and Federico.

After Hutchins pitched another scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts, the Saints got some more insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Landman led off the inning by smacking a homerun to left, then Jack Finnegan singled, stole a base, and then was singled home by Sean Desjardins to give the Saints their second run of the inning and fourth run of the game.

Things got scary for Hutchins in the bottom part of the frame as the senior gave up three straight singles to fill the bags with no outs. Despite this, Hutchins stayed in the game and stranded all three runners by getting a strikeout and a double-play ground ball to preserve the three-run St. Lawrence lead.

This ended his afternoon on the mound as he finished with six innings, six hits, zero earned runs and nine strikeouts in line for the win.

Zuhlsdorf came into the game in the seventh for his first appearance of the year, pitching a scoreless inning to earn the save. The Saints won the first end of the double header 4-1 with Hutchins earning the win in his stellar performance.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 1, SUNY Purchase 9 (7 Innings)

Liam Hickey took the bump to start game two, and the Panthers got to him early. After Purchase loaded the bases, an error scored a run and opened the door for the Panthers catcher, Mason Compton, who slugged a grand slam to put the home team up 5-0 after the first inning.

The Panthers added on more runs in the second after a 2-run home run, which ended the start for Hickey. Boden Driscoll came in on relief, but got tagged for two more runs in the inning and the Saints found themselves down 9-0 after the second.

Offensively, St. Lawrence was on the back heel for the first half of the game. Connor doubled in the first and Landman singled in the second for the only two hits in the first three innings. Driscoll settled down on the mound, pitching a scoreless third and fourth inning with two strikeouts.

In the sixth inning, Mike Siano singled, Connor walked, and Federico singled to juice the bases for Gabe Albertson, coming in to pinch hit. Albertson made contact, driving the ball into center field for a sacrifice fly and getting the Saints on the board.

Polumbo and Karadenes both pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings respectively, but the Saints couldn't get anything going in the top of the seventh and dropped the contest 9-1 to split the doubleheader.

Looking Ahead

The Saints will next play in one week's time at the Russmatt Invitational in Davenport, Fla. The Saints will have eight total games in the Sunshine State starting with a doubleheader against the University of Southern Maine on Saturday, March 15.
