Baseball Walks Off Game One, Splits Doubleheader With Southern Maine

The St. Lawrence University baseball team walked off their first game of the day for a 3-2 win but fell 9-7 in game two against the University of Southern Maine on their first day in Davenport, Fla. at the Russmatt Invitational.

The Saints moved to 3-3 on the year, while Southern Maine went to 2-5.

Timothy Connor had three RBI on the day, while Brett Federico and John Gannon had two on the twin bill. Joe LaPrade earned his first career win in his game one outing pitching one inning and giving up no hits.

Game one: St. Lawrence 3, Southern Maine 2

Southern Maine hit the scoreboard first in the contest. With two outs put away, a walk, error, and wild pitch put a runner on third that came around to score on another error.

They would double their lead in the top of the third when a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases. Peter Keblin came through with a sacrifice fly to double the lead. Michael Hutchins and the Saints did well to minimize the damage getting the second out on a fielder's choice, which was aided by Sean Desjardins, and a fly out.

The next run came in the bottom of the sixth when St. Lawrence made it a 2-1 ball game. John Donnellan started the half-inning getting on base with a hit by pitch, then moved around to second on a wild pitch. He would advance to third on a ground out, before Connor knocked the junior home with a ground out but picked up an RBI.

After getting a shutdown inning by Laprade in which he forced two ground outs and a fly out, the Saints were down to their last chance in the bottom of the seventh.

Jack Finnegan provided a one-out single to get the ball rolling and moved to second on a hit by pitch. Both Finnegan and Desjardins stole a base and the bases were loaded when Matt Davis was also struck by a pitch. Mike Siano ended up tying the game when he was also plunked by the pitcher.

Connor came to the dish with the bases loaded and a chance to walk it off and helped do just that. The senior scorched a ball to the second baseman, but it was bobbled allowing the Saints to score and take the game.

Game two: St. Lawrence 7, Southern Maine 9

St. Lawrence wasted little time finding home plate in game two hanging three runs in the first half-inning. A leadoff error for Siano led to a double to right field from Connor which brought the shortstop around to score. Federico was next and the senior screamed a triple to the wall making it a 2-0 game. Gannon brought in the third run of the barrage with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Southern Maine answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring five runs. They scored on a wild pitch, a single, and a double to take a lead.

The Saints regained their lead in the top of the fourth with a big inning. A leadoff walk to Desjardins was a sign of things to come as five of the first six batters were walked scoring two runs in the process. Gannon was hit by a pitch to make it a 6-5 game and Finnegan drove in the last run of the inning with a sacrifice bunt to make it 7-5.

The lead lasted until the bottom of the sixth when Southern Maine tied the game with a two-RBI single. They then took the lead with a two-run double to make it 9-7. The Saints were unable to get a run in the top of the seventh to end the contest.

Next up:

The Saints will play Bowdoin in a double header tomorrow at the Northeast Regional Park starting at 3:45 p.m.
