Despite a late comeback attempt, the No. 11 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team fell 10-8 to SUNY Cortland in a close matchup on Wednesday in Cortland, N.Y
Senior
Bobby Wells and first-year
Jamie Rosenzweig scored two goals each in the effort. Junior
Sean Wiseman, senior
Zack Corsi, and sophomores
Daniel Mahoney, and
Asa Beach all put in one goal. Junior
Sam Wade chipped in an assist, while Rosenzweig picked up three ground balls.
On defense
Charlie Miele,

Padraic Condon went 16-for-21 at the faceoff dot and picked up 12 ground balls.
The Red Dragons started strong by scoring two straight goals to give them a 2-0 lead. The Saints responded by going on a run of their own, as Beach, Rosenzweig, and Wells all put in a goal each to give them the 3-2 lead by the end of the first.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second until there was 6:47 left, when Rosenzweig scored his second goal of the game off an assist from Wells. The Saints 4-2 lead did not last, as Cortland scored two more consecutive goals to tie the game back up, leaving the game tied 4-4 going into halftime.
Corsi scored the first goal of the third with 10:07 remaining to give the Saints one goal lead. Cortland gained a slight edge over the Saints after scoring three goals in the last two and a half minutes, giving them the 7-5 heading into the fourth.
Nick Stoecker scored just six seconds into the fourth quarter to give the Red Dragons the 8-5 lead. The Saints were not letting them pull away easily, as Wells put in another goal with ten minutes left to bring the game back within two. Cortland however put in two more consecutive goals to give them a 10-6 lead, which was the largest lead of the game. Wiseman and Mahoney scored in the final three and a half minutes of the game in a late comeback attempt, yet it was not enough as SUNY Cortland locked down on defense to win 10-8.
"It was the type of game we expected," said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "Credit to Cortland, they played good defense, got great goaltending down the stretch, and had an offensive spurt late in the third/early fourth that hurt us. I look forward to a great response heading into the weekend."
Sam Rothman and Nick Stoecker put in three goals each, while Sean Kavanagh recorded two assists to push the Red Dragons past St. Lawrence.
Senior
Michael Marinello made 11 saves on the day, while Travis Wagner stopped 17 for the Red Dragons.
Both St. Lawrence and Cortland moved to 2-1 on the season.
The Saints will look to bounce back on Saturday March 8th, as they take on Nazareth at the SUNY Canton Turf Field in Canton, N.Y. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
