Three Saints Score Twice, Down Union 11-8 on the Road

Caleb Torres, David Herlihy and Daniel Mahoney led the St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team with two goals each, as they took down Union College in Liberty League play with an 11-8 win on Saturday afternoon in Schenectady, N.Y.

St. Lawrence improves to 4-4 and picks up their first conference win, as they are now 1-1 in the league play, and Union drops to 3-6 and 1-1, respectively.

Patrick Murray, Jamie Rosenzweig, Henry Crean, Nate Stevens, and Bobby Wells all found the back of the net once. Rosenzweig led the team in assists with three.

On defense Charlie Miele and Torres both had two causes turnovers, while Padraic Condon went 12-20 on faceoffs and picked up a team-best seven ground balls.

Torres was the first to score in the game, as he found the back of the new halfway through the first quarter to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Union responded with two goals back-to-back to gain the lead, but Mahoney scored with five seconds remaining in the first to tie the game up at two.

The second quarter was back and forth, with St. Lawrence striking first, as Rosenzweig scored the first goal of the second quarter. Henry Quaintance tied things up at three, scoring on the man-up, yet the Saints scored two straight to give them a 5-3 lead. Union fired right back with two goals of their own to tie the game at five, but Torres scored 14 seconds later to give the lead back to the Saints, as the first half ended, 6-5.

The Saints shut Union out in third quarter, as they went on to scored four goals straight to extend their lead to five, as four different Saints scored to make it a 10-5 game heading into the fourth.

Mahoney was the first to score in final quarter of play, as he gave St. Lawrence a 11- 5 lead with 8:57 remaining. Union made a late comeback attempt as they scored three goals in a row to cut the lead down to three, but it wasn't enough, as the Saints held their lead and finished the game with the 11-8 victory.

"Really proud of the effort of the entire team today at a place that is never easy to win" said head coach Mike Mahoney." We were "all in" on preparation this week and that effort and attention to detail paid off. We have a quick turn around to Tuesday, so we will have to get right back at it and we hope to build some momentum heading into the second half of the regular season."

Michael Marinello put up an impressive season-best 16 saves, while Nick Lynch of Union almost matched him with 15 saves of his own.

St. Lawrence held a 26-24 edge in shots on goal, while both teams picked up 29 ground balls.

The Saints look to build a win streak, as they face SUNY Potsdam on the road on Tuesday, April 1st at 4 p.m.
