A strong second half from the 16th-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team was not enough against Skidmore, as the Saints fell 9-8 in Liberty League play in Brookline, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.
Cam Croasdaile and
Daniel Mahoney scored two goals,
David Herlihy,
Jamie Rosenzweig,
Bobby Wells, and
Bobby Bartlett each put up a goal in the effort, with Bartlett scoring his first goal of the season. On defense, Chalrie Miele and
Michael Miele both caused two turnovers.
Padraic Condon went 16-for-21 on faceoffs and picked up a team-high 13 ground balls.
Skidmore shutout the Saints in the first quarter, and scored two goals of their own to grab a 2-0 lead.
The Saints came out strong to begin the second, with Herlihy and Rosenzweig scoring a goal each to make it a 2-2 game. The Thoroughbreds proceeded to then to score four unanswered goals, giving them the 6-2 lead going into halftime.
St. Lawrence began their comeback in the third, outscoring Skidmore 3-1 in the quarter. Bartlett and Croasdaile both put in a goal to cut the lead down to two, Brian Gonsalves responded with a goal of his own to put them back up by three, but Croasdaile scored once again before the quarter ended, with the score being 7-5 going into the fourth.
Wells kicked things off in the final quarter with a goal assisted by
Nate Stevens to make it a one goal game, yet Skidmore found the back of the net once again to put them back up by two. Mahoney scored two goals back-to-back and made it an 8-8 game with 5:33 left to go in the game. Michael Aiello put in one final goal for Skidmore to give them the lead, and Saints were unable to respond as the game ended 9-8 in favor of Skidmore.
"I thought it was two teams that battled hard and Skidmore made the plays down the stretch to earn the victory," said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "Finding ways to win games down the stretch falls on me and we will keep working hard to find ways to get better."
Michael Marinello made nine saves, while Collin Kuester made six saves for Skidmore.
St. Lawrence falls to 3-4 and 0-1 in conference play, while Skidmore improves to 4-3 and 1-0 in conference play.
The Scarlet and Brown are back on the road for their next match up, as they are set to face Union in Schenectady, N.Y. on Saturday, March 29th at 3 p.m.
