Froimovitz Makes 15 Saves; Saints Pick Up Spring Break Win at Dickinson

First-year goalie Zoe Froimovitz made 15 saves, while Kelsey Roth and Neve Ley each scored a pair of goals to lead the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a 7-2 spring break win over Dickinson College on Wednesday afternoon in Carlisle, Pa.

Jessica LaPlaca tallied a goal and an assist for the Saints, while Cate Rathnam and Phoebe Spaeth also scored. Brigette Gable picked up a team-best four ground balls, while Ellie Camp and Haley Sundstrom each grabbed three. Sundstrom also recorded two caused turnovers.

A tight battle from the start, Rathnam struck first to give St. Lawrence the 1-0 lead just about two minutes into play. Dickinson netted a pair of goals 22 seconds apart, but Spaeth scored to tie things up 2-2 before the end of the first quarter. Nearing the four-minute mark, both teams were granted a free-position opportunity, but both goaltenders were up to the task, keeping the game tied into the second quarter.

Just about midway through the second, the Saints struck for the go-ahead goal with a woman-up goal from Roth. Roth's goal would stand as the lone goal of the second frame, as the Saints held a 3-2 lead at halftime.

Ley doubled up the scoring for the Saints scoring the first goal of the second half on a free position shot. The Saints went on to shut out the Red Devils in the third 3-0 to build a 6-2 lead heading into the final frame.

Ley scored her second of the game and the only goal of the fourth to seal the 7-2 win for the Saints.

"I am really proud of the team," said head coach Tom Ryan. "To put together that performance against a good team after our 1-3 start says a lot about our heart and resiliency. Our offense was unselfish. Our defense was relentless. Zoe was unconscious. Definitely a turning point for our young season."

Caroline Cavendish and Sage Whiteside scored for Dickinson, while Mia Seergae and Izzy Hall each picked up two ground balls and caused a turnover.

Froimovitz stopped a career-best 15 shots for the Saints, while Peyton Vandorpe made 10 for Dickinson.

The Red Devils finished with a 29-24 edge in shots on goal, but the Saints picked up 20 ground balls to Dickinson's 14.

St. Lawrence improved to 2-3 on the season with the non-conference win, while the Red Devils fell to 5-3.

The Saints will continue their spring break travels to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., as they return to Liberty League play against Vassar on March 22nd at 11 a.m.
