Baseball Drops a Pair to Worcester State

Mike Siano led the St. Lawrence University baseball team with two RBI on the day, but the Saints ultimately dropped a pair of games against Worcester State on Monday afternoon at the Russmatt Invitational in Davenport, Fla.

St. Lawrence fell to 3-6 with the losses, while Worcester improved to 4-2.

Game one: St. Lawrence 3, Worcester State 4

The Saints found home plate first in the top of the opening inning and were aided by the defense. Timothy Connor reached on an error and a walk moved him into scoring territory. Connor stole third and thanks to a throwing error scored the game's first run. Brett Federico came in behind walking home with the bases loaded.

Worcester chipped at the 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run.

Another error from Worcester in the top of the third allowed St. Lawrence to score. Much like the first inning, Siano stole third and because of an error scooted home to make it 3-1.

Worcester answered back in the next half-inning with an RBI double to make it a 3-2 contest.

The decisive blow came in the bottom of the fourth when a walk followed by an inside-the-park home run gave the opposition the 4-3 lead.

The Saints were unable to tie up the contest late and settled for the loss.

David Zuhlsdorf started the game pitching 2.1 innings and striking out three. Joshua Polumbo pitched the final 4.2 innings striking out three.

Game two: St. Lawrence 5, Worcester State 13

The Lancers jumped on the Saints in the top of game two posting four runs. A pair of walks and errors led to their first run of the game, then a three-run home run put them up 4-0 after the top.

A leadoff hit by pitch in the bottom half of the first, followed by a single led to a Matt Davis sacrifice fly to cut into the deficit. Federico then singled home a second run to make it a 4-2 game.

Worcester put another run on the board in the top of the second but their big inning came in the third. The Lancers used a pair of home runs and plat discipline to take a commanding 13-2 lead.

Eoin Morrissey provided an RBI single in the fourth, while Gannon and Siano each swatted in a run in the bottom of the fifth, but that was as close as the Saints would get.

Shota Kubota started the game for St. Lawrence, while Joe LaPrade came in relief for 1.2 innings. Jared Brenner, Michael Flyzik, Owen Gray, and Noah Spaulding combined to pitch the rest of the game.
