Baseball Rallies for Game Two Comeback Win; Split Twin Bill Versus Hamilton

After falling in game one, the St. Lawrence University baseball team rallied late in game two with seven runs in the final two innings to earn a twin bill split against Hamilton on their final day at the Russmatt Invitational in Davenport, Fla.

St. Lawrence moved to 4-7 on the season with the win, while Hamilton went to 3-2.

Brett Federico powered the offensive effort with three RBI and his first career home run. John Gannon, Mike Siano, Daniel Verrastro, and Eoin Morrissey also chipped in RBI in the furious game-two comeback effort.

Samuel Fosberg earned the win in game two, while two-way star Timothy Connor slammed the door and got the save on the bump.

Game one: St. Lawrence 2, Hamilton 5

Hamilton jumped out to a small lead in game one getting a sacrifice fly, but the Saints took the lead in the bottom half of the first.

A leadoff walk to Jack Finnegan followed by a passed ball put the speedster in scoring position and he was smacked home by a single to right field from Federico. In the next at-bat, Wille Landman dug out a single to the shortstop, but a botched throw left St. Lawrence with runners on second and third. The Saints took the 2-1 lead in the next at-bat scoring on a wild pitch.

The Continentals eventually knotted the contest at two apiece in the top of the third with an RBI triple to right field.

Hamilton then got runs on a groundout, another triple, and an RBI single to take a 5-2 lead which they held to the end.

James Morr started the game on the hill pitching an inning and was relieved by Brenden O'Neil, who also pitched an inning. Brendan Karadenes pitched the next three, while Ryan McCausland and Michael Flyzik combined to pitch the final two.

Game two: St. Lawrence 7, Hamilton 4

Game two rolled along early with the lineups going down in order for the first two innings.

That would change in the bottom of the third when the Continentals hung a crooked number. Hamilton used two walks, two doubles, and a single to power home four runs and take a commanding lead.

St. Lawrence showed signs of life offensively in the fifth and finally came alive in the top of the sixth.

With one out away, Matt Davis sparked the attack with a double to deep left-center to get things rolling. Federico reached on an error in the next at-bat to put the Continentals into a jam. The next three at-bats consisted of a Gannon double, Siano, single, and a Verrastro double to make it a 4-3 game. Morrissey then tied the game with a sacrifice fly to make it a new ballgame. A walk to DiStefano, followed by a failed pickoff attempt would score Verrastro and give the Saints the lead.

Armed with the lead, the Scarlet and Brown turned to Connor from his post at first base to come in and pitch. The senior struck out a batter and got through the bottom of the sixth to hold the lead.

St. Lawrence wasn't done tacking on the runs, so they extended their lead in the top of the seventh. Davis once again got things started getting on base off a hit by pitch. He was brought home promptly by Federico, who blasted a hanging breaking ball over the right field wall to make it a 7-4 game. The home run was the first in Federico's college career.

Connor came back out onto the mound to close things out striking out another batter and keeping the Continentals at bay to get the save.

Along with Connor, Brendan Young started the game pitching two innings, and was followed by JJ Humenay, who pitched the next 2.1. Fosberg pitched two-thirds of an inning and earned the win.

Next up:

The team will fly back to New York and begin preparing for Liberty League play this weekend. The Saints will be in Ithaca this weekend for a three-game set starting on Friday, March 21.
