Saints Put On Offensive Clinic in Win Over William Smith

Elizabeth Flynn led the way with 18 points and a double double, three other Saints were in double-figures and the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team scored a season high in points in their 81-59 win over the William Smith Herons on Saturday afternoon in Burkman Gymnasium.

The Saints have won four of their past five contests, en route to a 14-7 overall record and a 8-6 Liberty League record which puts them in a tie for fifth with Skidmore with four games remaining.

"It was a nice weekend for us getting a sweep and continuing to learn where we play well as a team," said Saints head coach Dan Roiger. "We've made good progress since Christmas and when we shoot like we did today we are a good team. Two wins this weekend has put us in a good spot in our league and the next two weekends we play only teams even or above us in the standings, so we have our work cut out for us this weekend in practice. We need to continue to learn to compete and be intense on defense for all 40 minutes."

The Saints were solid on both ends of the floor to begin the game. Annie Perry and Jackie Malley each had five points in the early part of the first quarter and the Saints quickly found themselves up 16-2 six minutes into the game. Defensively, the Saints forced seven William Smith turnovers in the first half, leading to a 23-8 lead after one quarter.

The Herons were much improved in the second quarter, scoring the first seven points to trim the St. Lawrence lead to 23-15. Throughout the quarter though, the Saints continued to score, never letting the Herons get any closer than six. The Saints closed the half with a 6-0 run, with Norah Niesz, Caelan McHarney and Hannah VanDyke all scoring in the final minutes. The Saints led 39-27 at the end of the first half with Niesz leading the way with 10 points.

The third quarter was one of the best of the season for the Saints on the offensive side of the floor as the Herons could not get stops. St. Lawrence slowly padded onto their lead and towards the end of the quarter, the Scarlet and Brown found themselves up 60-45 after a three by Caelan McHarney.

To cap off an already dominant performance, McHarney had a steal in the backcourt and a fastbreak layup with three seconds left to give the Saints 25 points for the quarter as the team lead was now 64-47. The Saints quickly earned a 20 point lead after Annie Perry cashed in a three with 8:53 left to go and Desiree DuBois got the Saints above 80 points with just over a minute left.

In total, 11 players scored on the afternoon for the Saints in their 22 point victory.

McHarney had 15 points, Niesz had 13 with 10 in the first half, and Annie Perry tied a career-high with 13 off the bench in just 19 minutes. Flynn had 10 rebounds to go along with her 18 points and McHarney led St. Lawrence with six assists. The Saints shot 42 per cent from the field and were 6-for-13 from three as a team.

The Saints will be back in Burkman on Friday, February 14 against the first-place Ithaca Bombers. The Bombers handled the Saints 79-59 in the first matchup in Ithaca.
