Cristall's Big Day Powers the Skating Saints' 4-4 Tie and Shootout Win over Princeton

Junior forward Tyler Cristall starred for the Saints scoring twice in regulation, then scored again in the shootout to give the St. Lawrence University a shootout win and the second league point in a 4-4 tie at Princeton on Saturday night in New Jersey.

St. Lawrence moved to 8-18-2 overall with the tie, and 4-10-2 in ECAC play, while the Tigers went to 10-11-2, and 5-9-2 in league action.

After having just one power play total in last night's contest, the first period of this one was marred by three power play chances between the two teams.

The Tigers had the first crack but were turned away. St. Lawrence had a chance of their own shortly after and also came up empty-handed. Princeton got another chance late in the period and cashed in with a goal from Jaxson Ezman to make it 1-0 after one period.

The Saints were called for another infraction early in the second period and paid the price as Princeton got another man-advantage goal, this time from Kevin Anderson.

The game cruised into the second half of the second where the Scarlet and Brown found the scoreboard. Isaac Tremblay, who was forechecking, intercepted a poor pass and roofed a shot past Arthur Smith to cut into the deficit.

Armed with a power play early in the thirds, it looked as if Reilly Connors had scored on the man advantage, but for the second night in a row his goal was called back on review.

Upon going back out for the power play, the Saints wasted little time as Tremblay skipped a pass up to Gabe Westling, who found Cristall at the blue line. The forward stepped in and wired a shot off the crossbar and in to tie the game at 2-2.

It looked as if the Saints had fully claimed the momentum, but moments later the Tigers regained their lead with a goal from Brendan Gorman at the 3:50 mark of the third. Princeton later got a goal from Jake Manfre, and unlike the Connors tally, the goal was upheld in video review to make it 4-2.

The Scarlet and Brown used the review to their advantage scheming up a way to get into the game with eight minutes to go. Cristall, who was feeling himself with 19 shot attempts in the game, nearly scored his second goal of the game, but saw his long-range wrister ring off the post.

St. Lawrence did finally get their third goal with 5:30 to go in the game when Jan Olenginski intercepted a pass and saw his centering pass deflect off a defender and in to make it 4-3. Cristall got back to work following the goal and came up with the equalizer. After being shut down on two previous chances, the junior stepped back into the zone and burnt Smith to tie the game at 4-4.

The contest went to overtime and the Saints had the better of the chances. Cristall, Felikss Gavars, and Drake Burgin all had chances to take the win, but Cayden Casey came the closest hitting the pope at the 3:28 mark.

In the shootout, Cristall capped off his career game netting a goal to give the Skating Saints the lead. Dominic Basse did the rest slamming the door on three Tiger chances to secure the second league point.

Basse finished with 21 saves in the effort, while Smith came up with 24 in the home net.

Princeton went 2-for-4 in the game on the power play, while the Saints went 1-for-4 with one of their chances being one second long at the end of overtime.

The Scarlet and Brown will head back to Canton where they will play host to Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend at Appleton Arena.
